thanks

It will depend on your individual setup, which motor your car has, how much compression and timing advance you're running, what kind of cam/cams etc etc
But VERY generally speaking, 98 octane will be best for your car. I recommend BP ultimate.
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?
another BP ultimate here.
Going a bit off topic here...
I have always run my 1jz supra on ultimate cause I was told it good for it
Just wondering what will happen if i dont? Its just that when i drive it hard there is quite a noticeable difference in price as she is a thirsty beast.
Lower octane fuel is more likely to pre-ignite, as such you have to 'wind back the wick' (such as retarding timing or lowering boost levels) in order to prevent damage to your motor (especially if modified), such as pinging and detonation. Detonation kills motors fast.
Obviously this isn't an issue with standard motors as they are designed to use the lowest quality fuel in the region and run fine, but will run better on higher rated fuels (unless they're designed to run on leaded / some new euro cars have 95/98RON minimum).
Also if your vehicle has been tuned on 98, running it on lower octane fuel is probably about the best way to do as much damage to it as possible. If it's set up to run high octane then fucking stop being a jew and run high octane in it.
Newer vehicles with OBD2 and constantly variable fuel trim / timing adjustments actually adapt to the fuel you put in them regularly by 'seeing' detonation / knocking thresholds and adjusting mixtures, timing and such accordingly. Great in theory, actually, in practice as well. But it's a slow learning process, so if it learns to work with 98 all the time, and then you put a tankfull of 91 octane in it... it's going to ping it's head off all the way to the dealership when you say 'what the fuck is wrong with my car'.
anyway, rambles.
My corona pings on 91 but runs sweet on 98 (it is designed for leaded fuel, lol)

I have had quality issues with both caltex and mobil. I.e. water in fuel / so low quality it'll cause my car to ping under normal driving circumstances
Minor issues with shell, but i'll use it.
BP / Liberty ftw.
