yeah the outer is easy, and its easy to follow, you just have to use the right cut off wheel, like in the pic.

the inner is harder, you have to get down on your back to cut it. also there are 4 spot weld per side you have to drill out inside the car where the reinforcement ties to, up near where the rear seat back rests.

i am going to try the 70 guards yeah, I'm going to rivet them in place first and flair them and see how they look/if theyre big enough, theyre not as big as 86 fronts thats for sure. if they don't work out ill just get a pair of 86 fronts and use them, they will definately work. you can use the guard from any car really, with enough work, but if the radius to massively different it will look odd.

your idea will work for the outer, but itll end up looking really rounded unless you bash the cut away section down or put vertical cut in up to the outer crease so it can overlap itself. you will also still have to seperate the inner from the outer at some point so it can move.

i cut the inner out so i can get good access for flairing and other repairs, also to make a little bit more room, i am going to replace it but just run it horizontally straight out till it meets the outer, not following it down. this means the outer section of the guard will be able to flex more when it rubs. it has to rub to look right. should all end up being a bit lighter too which can't hurt.

if it doesnt rub you have the wrong wheels.

i have the press in ball joint type too, when i measure them up to standard by eye looked about 20mm and i just assumed you had the bolt in ball joint type. In that case good purchase, i think 30mm is not excessive by any means, once you have some camber tops and have mucked around with your guard rim combo you can dial out a smidge of camber but still keep awesome track. Which I'm sure your well aware of.
