you car wash them as long as you dry them out good and proper when your finished, then again a new set won't cost too much

What you can do, if you just want to clean the outsides for appearences - get a rag and some turps and wipe it down. I used maserati brite shine (rim polishing wool) on my old ones, were 10 year old filthy red jobbies, looked brand new.
Or just buy new ones.
You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?
sweet.. i figured as much.. just took to them with some turps and got all the crud off them..
cheers

I personally found using a dry kitchen scourer did wonders

ok.. I'm doing some more inspection, and it appears that in the spark plug valley closest to the firewall there is a bit of oil.. not sure how it got there, but the spark plug is a little dirty too.. where would oil (or how) be coming from to get into here?

ok sorry if this is a really dumb question but do you ever spill tiny amounts when you fill the engine up?
for me I was droping a little at a time and it was building up all sorts of crap

It might be that just your cam cover gasket is not sealing well at the back. You might want to replace them.
Silicon spray or WD-40
