Afaik, fans are there to draw air through the radiator when there is no air flow through it, ie, sitting at the lights/traffic. Should be fine in normal driving with air passing through it though. I think I did read in another thread that Sam_Q (?) runs his 20v with no fan, and hasn't had overheating issues to date. That being said, depending on your location, the weather will have a lot to do with cooling issues. If you just bought it recently, be aware that it WILL be hotter in summer as opposed to now, going into winter. To be safe I would spend the small amount of money to buy a thermo switch and a $50 thermo fan from supercheap auto.

either a automatic switch or manual switch for the thermo, dont having it running all the time so it warms up quicker and when just crusing it will help to keep it up at a higher temp. when it cold i.e. of a night or really early mornings my bus struggles to get upto full operating temp due to a bit of a over kill sized radiator. but atleast it doesnt get hot any more i guess

Yeah no need to have one on permanently. Get a Davies Craig thermo switch. Easy as to install and you'll never have to worry about turning the fan on/off manually. Just set temperature and away you go.

Even when driving along, (mostly regulated to 50km/h these days) a fan cools the rad much better than not having one. I had trouble with a regular Camry overheating, untill I found the electric fans were stuffed.

If you have a RWD waterpump, it is far easier to to put the stock fan on with the mechanical clutch. But if you have to buy the viscous clutch new, a electric one may work out cheaper, but the mechanical one will work very well. And use the plastic shroud also. The undertray, plus bits of foam and rubber in various gaps (which came from the factory) all assist in cooling.

also just to add that if you are using a toyota external thermostat (ae82/92 etc.) the housing has a switch in it that can be setup to control the thermo fans via a relay.

    works well.

I bought a kit from jay car that monitors falling voltage wired it into the sensor at the back of the head. now i have full control of when the fan turns on and off. havent had a chance to set it up in driving conditions yet but after running for around 3-4 min she kicks the fan in. another option if your handy with a soldering iron

If you're not, you can still use the inlet off the ae82, ae92 thermostat with your rwd 4ac or 4age pump and use the integrated thermo switch.
