Hey, this could be well known I'm not sure but i was keen to know all this stuff and just stumbled across so thought id throw it up for everyone. ive never seen it till now
the w55 seems the closest to t50, (ratio wise) and i love my ratios for our tracks so ill, prob stick close to them

the w57 and w58 are meant to be "close ratio" boxes.
the w57/8 both benifit from a 1.0:1 drive 4th gear.
the main difference between the two is the overdrive gear (5th)
with the w58 better for highway cruising
the "W" box is almost identical on the outside. and made of alloy.
the only way to tell them apart is to figure out the 5th gear ratios.
so with the box on 5th gear, if you were to turn the input shaft 20x (cluch end), the tail shaft would turn.
w55 23.53 turns
w57 23.22
w58 25.54
the more turns you use, the more acurate the result i.e. w55 x 100 = 117.65 / w57 x 100 = 116.14
so as you can tell this is really only good for w55/7 to w58 comparison
to tell the difference between w55 and w57 select 1st and turn input shaft 20x, the tail shaft will turn
w55 4.89
w57/8 5.31
this is the only way i'm aware of to identify these boxes without opening them?
anyone correct me if i'm wrong
almost all factory rwd gearboxes have a 1:1 4th.
55s have an alloy sandwich plate.
57/58.. honestly, the difference.. who cares? condition is more important.

why would you pay a premium for a 58 over a 57? theyre the same thing except a slight difference in 5th gear ratio.
what i am saying is, id have a low k fresh import 57 over a worn out old 58 from some locally delivered shit box any day.

i drive both box'es... and theres really not much noticable difference between the w57 and w58, theres about 300 to 400rpm difference in 5th in a 6mge, my personal preference i'd say get the w57 or failing that just get the cheepest one.
Easiest way to tell if you have a W58 (far easier than pulling it apart) is to just leave it out in the rain for a day..
The iron/steel sandwhich plate will go a lovely rusty brown/black
