Theirs one thing I don't get in the video. He doesn't weld the actual coilover sleeve to the strut, it just sits free on the perch. And he mounts it as low as possible, just above the brake line bracket.
In Drift Tengoku 9 they do a similar conversion to an ae86 strut but they weld the coilover sleeve onto the strut and mount it a fair bit higher from the brake line bracket, they're also using a different shock so maybe this has something to do with where it's mounted.
i managed to get through 2:11 of that. the dude pretty much embodies everything that is annoying about americans.
re sleeve height. depends on the length spring you use, how much you shorten the strut by, and what stroke shock you use.
short spring with sleeve close to the top is the go i think.
re welding. well those sleeves are "aluminum" they come with a little steel ring you weld to the strut to sit on.
theyre a bit shit really. really loose fit. top hat has like a huge 20mm hole in it, and then you use washers (supplied with the kit) to go between the insert and the hat so it doesnt slip through..
ok price but a pretty sub par kit overall.

i had to belt my alloy sleeves on to the perch, its a fkn tight fit

not on the strut though.

This is the kit in question.
The ring/perch fits in side the sleeve. I take you just pull it apart and slide it over the strut?
And what do i do with the rubber washers?
There are also 6 stubby alan screws which I'm assuming are to stop the sleeve moving. Only I have to drill and tap the hole for them.
This is the other kit i have...
The one on the left. It already has the alan screws in. May be I'll just use the best parts of both to make up my coil overs.
Also can someone explain why he uses a spacer at the bottom of the shock? I thought the reason for cutting the strut was to suit the short shock length?

i personally dont like the kit man. i know youve got it, and if it works for you and youre happy then great, thats all that matters.
re spacer. the idea with a dampners is to have a certain amount of droop at static, when the car rolls or you drive over a pot hole or similar, the wheel can drop down and still stay in contact with the ground.
to achieve this with the short stroke/body shox we use, at a workable ride height, sometimes you need to use a spacer.
the common ae92 dimensioned trd inserts (short stroke yellows and blues) almost always need a spacer unless you want your ridiculously low.. as in x member 60mm off the ground or less.
with the commonly used celica agx, you dont really need the spacer, as theyre a bit longer in the stroke than trd/hts.
