theres something in the water down in melbourne
When I first got my ra65 I aspired to own an AE86 because it was the cheapest "performance" orientated car that had the necessities that I wanted. I never even considered the ke70's or ae71's, just considered them some shit heap 80's corolla that looked like crap and were driven by grannies.
Hardly anyone even bothered to modify them and the only seriously modified one I knew of was teh_witzl's pmpboi which appeared to be done out of boredom more than anything.
But then I found out that they were quite similar to the ae86's that I had wanted and realised that if you can forgoe the looks, they can be quite decent little performers. But by then I no longerd cared for ae86's and wanted something much newere and more powerfull, so they were still just a blip on the radar in my mind.
What really turned me around on them was seeing what Kev aka Phrostbyte did to his one. And then on a much more serious level, Karl Skewes in NZ built up a drift dedicated DX which looked tough as balls. From that point onward my opinion changed

Maybe I should rephrase that.
What got you into ke70's and ae71's for those that like to misinterpret things
although similar, i still think Xe7X's are granny spec shit heaps
just my 2 cents
i remember that morning like it was yesterday, because i had the toaster set to 3, medium brown. I walked outside and the fresh spring air hit my nostrils like you would hit a hooker on the ass. I knew from that moment there was something about that day. Something was destined to happen. I made my way to the local shops, I was so off in my own little word of slapping hookers that I was hit by a car, I looked up and saw a tan beauty, some have spoken to me before about love at first sight, but I never believed it, until now. As it stood in all its glory, quietly purring away, I knew it was the one, and that it had to be mine. From that day forth, and even to this day, upon such a delightful day it is also, I lord the keto.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beally i think you make up 4.5% of the graph
Like most, i always loved the Ae86 but at the time i couldnt afford one as well as keep my daily. The Ae71 was cheap and it was to become a small project car.
I think the point when i truely started to respect the ke70's was when i bought an Ae86 finally.... I quickly found out that both cars are fun, but a stock Ae86 is no comparison to a ke70 thats built for drift (and obviously vice-versa).
I know I'm going to get another ae86 later down the line, because i now love both the ae86 and the ke70 for their different traits, and i still wish to do a decent built up ae86
