To be honest, "FT-86" would not be much of a name for a car if they are expecting to sell a heap.
They will brand it Celica most likely because people can relate to the brand and it has a whole heap more 'mainstream' history than the ae86 (I mean this in terms of sales, not motorsport [although that could be debated also]).

To half the world 'ae86' means absolutely nothing. The people who know what it means, will have been following the production of this car from the get go anyway, and will not give a craaaap if it's named celica, supra, or something completely different. They will just enjoy it (or hate it depending on the success of the production car).

EDIT just read the article. totally nailed it on the head ayyyyyyy lol.

This car should fill a large gap in the market, and should do really well. It's good to see Toyota trying to 'bring back the joy of driving' and attracting a younger demographic.

labeling that thing "86" ( shakes head) it resembles nothing of an 86 in anyway, and just looks like a new celica.
perfect for those mummies wanting a "sports car"

    fail.

what do you want? a rusty square bucket? name is debatable, but I wouldn't say it doesn't share any of the same traits.

They should bring out an ae86 version. Factory options could include rust holes ($500 on top of metallic paint surcharge), lack of interior/sound deadening (same price as leather pack), ridiculous wheel fitment ($3000, i.e. Cheaper than most people want for a set of 14s with a neg offset) so it could never be driven out of a dealership and a slopped out whiney weldy ($1100 upgrade from LSD). Mint, would be the next cult car for sure!

Seriously though, looks brilliant, why couldnt toyota have kept the 1jz on their lineup for just a little bit longer though....
