As far as I've come to learn on dirt bikes to a certain extent it doesn't matter if you got a 2009 450 or a 91 250 2 stroke it all comes down to the rider. As to what bike is going to be quicker.

So you still got the rmx? or the cr now?

250fs are so slow. i've got a wr426 with full road reg but i won't ride it on the road till i get some spare wheels with a cush drive, road tyres and some decent gearing.

i'd prolly go a drz400. they'll be learner approved, require little maintenance and should come into your price range aswell

I'd recommend against a race type bike most often mentioned in this thread, you won't be racing it, and I'd guess not riding it close to 100%. Something more mild and reliable would still be good fun. DRZ400 springs to mind. They go, and are reliable.

DR650 you can get as low as you like fairly easily, require zero maintainence ever (28000km and 4 oil changes. Nothing else. Valves were still perfectly in adjustment) but are a little more slow and boring than the DRZ400 (and a lot more boring than anything else mentioned in this thread). They may be a little pricier than what you're looking to spend too, and then a little money spent on their spongy suspension is a good thing.

Nice 2009 model then? I love my 4 thumper but still love the feel of riding a 250 2 stroke when they come on ban and how loud they scream.
I'd love to get another 2 stroke to take to the track as the WR is crap on a track better in the bush.

Don't worry about it. My XR650R is only a bit less and I don't have any trouble giving the 450 blokes a run on the trails.

On the road a few extra KG is an advantage anyway.

big benny with the good advice again, all reports from everywhere else say the drz400sm providing I can set it up to swing my short ass over it, and learner legal, gunna put off buying a bike for another couple of months cause I'm guna blow my budget by about double haha

everything else is too dedicated bush based.

sounds like you know your shit floody.

I'd prefer something straight off the shelf for the time being that way I don't get little niggly issues, I can just get my leg over it, and with susp compressed have just a little more than the balls of my feet on the ground so it's perfect!

screw that 2 stroke motards are awesome saw this bloke on a husky 2 banger go through princes and springvale road round the corner on band with the front wheel up just a little bit, so nuts! + band is like boost so fun..
still for a runabout drz400 seems like the sensible choice, i'v seen heaps round and they look pretty sick too
