Default timing, fuel economy, dyno tuning?

    hi everyone.

I just heard today that you can increase fuel efficiency from a tune (der..) but my main problem is that my stock 4age is putting out 350km (tops) in a full tank (regardless of highway or road)

my mate told me his friend had his car dyno tuned with a stock ecu and something with the o2 sensor and timing gave the car 200+km per tank and performance was clean and responsive- also it was cheap.

has anyone had any experience with this? the bloke has moved interstate so can't ask him personally, and how much would you pay for a service like this..and for NSWers, where would be the best+ bang for buck place?

    thanks

    Terry

you cant 'tune' a stock toyota ECU.......they arent like a nissan one where you can just reflash with a nistune.

the best thing you can do for the car is replace all the filters, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor button, fit a new o2 sensor, and have the timing checked and base timing reset.

drive the car and see how it goes after that.....it definitely wont get any worse.

be aware, the o2 sensor wont increase performance or power.....all it does is make fuel trim adjustments when you are cruising.

The o2 sensor is actually an item which should be replaced every 100,000kms or so but no one ever does it.

My bet this "tune" would have been injector service / clean, TPS adjustment, new o2 sensor, new plugs and fresh oil. Do these to any car and it'll run heaps better.

Also check if the ECU is throwing any error codes. It could be a sensor is missing/has died and has put the ECU into mega-rich limp mode.

Slide86: all filters and injectors cleaned/replaced and mech said base timing is correct.. might have to replace the o2 sensor and the spark section i guess

Matt: I'll look into getting the TPS adjusted and replacing the o2 sensor..otherwise, everything should be up to par. and i think i had about 35L i put in with whatever was left in there...it was full

Hen may possibly be a nut: how many kms should i expect to get from a jdm 16v bigport?

that's only 10L/100km on the open road that should go down to under 8,

the fact that it's the same around town or on the highway suggests the O2 sensor I think

350km was same as my first 86, bigport, no o2 sensor, running rich
Was able to pull 380-90km a few times..

I believe with a stock 16v, everyday driving, should be able to do 400km easy with a full tank

dont measure km per "tank" of fuel. thats a useless measurement.

fill it all the way to the brim. hit the trip meter.

drive it untill you need fuel again, fill it up to the brim, take note of how many Litres you put in, and what your trip meter sais.

then work out your Litres per 100km. anything under 10 is good.

also how accurate is your speedo....

^ thank you. Kms/tank does my head in when I see it.

My sprinter with 4.8's, st20v, blacktop ecu would get 450ks/45litres city driving
