Measure the voltage when running, should be 14 and when off mid to high 12.
Hey everyone,
So i have been having an electrical issue for some time now (charge light was constantly on). But today was the first time i tried to fix it.
Before today I used to be able to start my car easily, drive and be laughing. But if i let it sit there for more than a few days it would kill the battery.
I got back from 5 day holiday yesterday and decided it was time to do biz this morning. I bought a new battery and chucked her in.
After expecting a no hassles start I was fronted with it cranking and getting to the stage where its just about to kick over and start but it just wouldnt.
I kept trying and after spraying some carby cleaner in my weber it eventually started after a few more tries.
So whilst it was running i tested to see if it was the alternator but it still ran after i took the positive terminal off.
I found a blown fuse in the charge bit. So after facepalming myself i went and purchased a new fuse chucked her in and WHAMMO. Charge light was off, lights are brighter.
Life is good.
But then after letting it sit for a few hours. It had the same problems as this morning and would crank over as if it would normally start but just when it reaches that bit. No dice.
I had to get a jump start home.
Any ideas on what it could be?
Cheers Sam

alternator might need a rebuild
from all the ae86 i have driven between me and siblings, 90% of the time the battery died because the alternator wasn't charging all the time.. i assumed it didnt work when the car got way to hot and the car just had to run off the battery then grained it all
Like yourself went through the simple troubleshooting and replaced the fuse, checked voltage when running and off! as Matt said, should be 14 and off mid to high 12.
This is true but the car still kept running low on voltage, new battery got wasted etc..diagnoses, faulty alternator. Got a rebuilt one, fixed the problem...until the rebuilt alternator got faulty again and started all over again.

dose
When its running its on around 14.2 and when its off its on around 13.2
It just kicked over then and started after a few attempts... :/
So the motor is turning over, but the car is not starting?
If the starter seams strong, do the usual things like check spark etc. You've definately got enough voltage for it to start. May pay to load test the battery too, if you don't have a load tester leave your headlights on for about 5 mins and if the battery is drained massively it is probably time for a new one.
Check your earths also and battery terminals are tight
