sounds like it might just be the coil.
Car model: 82 ke70 Panno -
Engine type: 16v 4AGE with EMS Stinger 4424 ECU
Problem: Will start when cold and maybe run for 5 minutes then just die, no coughs or splutters
The car was running fine, then 4 days ago i got about 7kms from home and after taking off from the lights the car just died, I couldn't get it started again, I got towed home and then a mechanic came out and said there was no spark. He claimed it was either the dizzy or the ignition module. I left it for about 2-3 hours and it started, got around the corner and down the road then it did the exact same thing. Could it be the ECU or maybe just the coil? It just dies, no spluttering at all.
sounds like it might just be the coil.
That's what i thought, but it's getting a spark and then just doesn't work.
Yeah they sometimes die and only work when theyre cold.
You can check it by starting it and waiting till it dies. Then while youre trying to start it, see if the coil is getting a signal. Then check if its giving an output (which youve already checked when you got no spark)
Or just swap the coil for a new one anyway and see if it works...
Yeah, I wasn't sure about it but it would make sense that it's the coil, but then tonight I started it then waited till it died, tried again and got a spark, it just didn't ignite so I'm not quite sure.. I just didn't want to go spending $90 on something i don't need :/
You can test it somewhat with a multimeter (e.g. within resistence specs) following the factory service manual and the electrical diagnosis manual. The diagnosis manual is good to isolate the problem methodically to save you the dollars and headaches.
wait till it fails again, then immediately tip cold water on the coil, then see if it starts. then do the same to the coil........
sounds stupid, but its an effective way to check a CAS fault on commodores.......when they get hot they expand and go open circuit causing the engine to stall, pouring cold water on them cools the sensor and rebridges the circuit.
That could work! I felt the module right after the car died and it wasn't even slightly warm, that's why i suspected something else. I'll try the multimeter and also the water. Thanks guys!
Post a pic of the coil Richard... I don't think it's standard... might help with the problem. This also has a EMS Coil Ignitor installed
