I'm almost 100% certain that there is no such thing, bonnets need to be able to fold to absorb a frontal impact and carbon will just splinter.
Hey guys
was wondering if anyone knows where I can pick up a ADR approved carbon bonnet for my ae86
thanks
nick
I'm almost 100% certain that there is no such thing, bonnets need to be able to fold to absorb a frontal impact and carbon will just splinter.
Im almost 100% certain there is no ADR specifically for bonnets.
Read VSB14 which says that fibreglass panels need to have been tested by a NATA approved facility, which is the reason noone has bothered to get aftermarket panels standard approved. I would assume that carbon could be done then if someone bothers to get it tested and approved.
Realistically, the bonnet wouldnt have much effect on the crumple zone or affect the strength of the front end much, so it would be possible.
I dont think there is anything which mentions the splintering of FRP panels versus OEM steel panels, I think thats just a common internet myth. Feel free to correct me if anyone knows though
if a bonnet has too much strength, it could act as a guillotine in a severe impact, severing the heads of vehicle occupants.
this is why on your ae86, there are "hooks" under your bonnet at the back of the engine bay near your windscreen wipers to catch it in the event of an accident.
a metal bonnet will fold absorbing energy, carbon will transfer energy.
Indeed, and the VSB states that every bonnet must have the hooks to catch the bonnet, and also a secondary latch to stop it flipping up (as all bonnet latches do).
But I cant find anything which mentions anything about a frontal crash and anything to do with folding versus breaking, or chopping a person in half or anything like that. I understand the concern for how differently it would react in a crash, but havent been able to find anything regarding it actually having a specific requirement. Ill ask at work on monday...
