Could be the knock sensor, but you'd expect your check engine light to come on...
Did you wire that in?
My bet is fuel related
Hi guys,
I recently fitted a 4age bt to my ae86.
When accelerating at full throttle in any gear the car will not rev past 6500rpm.
The car seems feels like its breaking down or hitting a rev limit. If you ease your foot of the throttle it clears up and revs to 8000rpm.
If you accelerate at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle you dont have any problems.
If checked the full pressure while it plays up and the pressure is good and well within the bt specs.
You can rev the car to 8000rpm whilst sitting on the spot.
The sta and spd wires are both connected.
Im also running 1nz coils off the standard ecu.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
And advice would be great

you would but anything is possible, i did wire it in and i also wired in an engine light.
but the engine light does not come on.
I've had similar problems with lack of fuel flow. (good pressure, just poor flow)

You can have any brew you want... as long as it's a Datsun / Corolla / What is that?
when i did the conversion i fitted as bigger fuel line and im running a low pressure pump in the tank which feeds a surge tank and from there it goes to a vl fuel pump.
While all of that is excellent provision for improved fuel flow, it does not mean that you do not have a restriction.
It's so quick to do a basic test that you might as well - put a drain tray under the car and take the fuel return line off the hardline on the body and point it into the draintray. key on, check flow. all ok? congrats, you wasted 3 minutes.
I very embarrassingly had a car which i'd just done a conversion experience these symptoms, beat my head against the wall for days. Turned out the brand new filter on the low pressure (lift side) fuel system had become blocked with shit from the fuel tank.

I checked the knock sensor today. it tested fine and i unplugged the knock sensor and attempted to drive the car with it disconnected.
Straight away the engine light came on. So i guess that rules the knock sensor out?
I also removed the return line and checked the pump flow. There was heaps of fuel flow.
Also the car plays up if you let it warm up and then take off and try accelerate lightly it coughs and farts. If you apply more throttle it does not clear up it just coughs and farts more. but if you ease of the throttle slightly it clears up and starts to drive ok. Which is pretty much what it does when accelerating flat out.
A while ago i opened the plug gaps up to 1.5mm for curiosty and the car broke down exactly the same just at 5500rpm instead.
Which makes me think its to do with the cop setup?
But know one else has had a similar issue.
Yeah that should rule out the knock sensor.. It is reasonably common for them to fail.
Shitty earths can also give symptoms of what you are saying. But it'd also pay to rip the lid off the ecu and make sure the caps haven't started leaking...
How exactly did you wire up the 1nz coil packs.. is the ignitor deleted or retained?
thanks for that, ill hav to have a look at the ecu in the next few days.
I kept the 20v igniter and coil so that i could hav a tacho signal.
The igt wire from the ecu goes to the 20v igniter and also bridges off to each 1nz coil
The igf wire goes to the 20v igniter
And ignition 12v to each coil and an earth to each coil
And the 20v coil has a wire to the 20v igniter and a 12v ignition source
