Exclamation Jdm ae86 fuel tank + bosch 040 internal pump or similar

Hey guys I'm just wondering of there is anyone out there that has modified the standard jdm86 tank to take a bigger pump for an engine conversion and if they came accross surging issues and how much modifying was required
    Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

What sort of engine conversion are you looking at?

4agte but i want to keep the interior as standard as possible and still be able to go low, so dont want to resort to external pump with surge tank

well i may have considered running it if i was going standard gze but i plan on running t28bb with roughly 15psi and dont want the engine to starve

Very similar setup to what i'll be running on my 7a 20v...

The physical diameter of the tanks fuel pickup plate is 65mm so realistically any in tank pump that is that diameter will be relatively easy to install.

Having the jdm tank already it'll have the baffles which should prevent surge. Just add some gates fuel hose to lengthen the pickup (if required) to ensure it sits at the bottom of the tank where the baffles are.

I am running a GTR pump in the factory holder JDM tank. It was a bitch to fit, had to enlarge the hole pictured above.
I upgraded the fuel supply line to 8mm, factory supply is now the return.
No surge on the track, but I never run under 1/4 to 1/8 in the tank.

I have seen 160rwkw with this setup and fuel is no issue.

Considering the ease of getting the Walbro intank pumps, I would go that way now. Hardest thing is making sure you get a genuine one.

I fitted a lift pump, 700ml surge tank and high pressure pump behind the diff and around the tank. Nothing hanging low and gave no problems for years. The only time I ever surged was when I entirely ran out of petrol.

An internal lift pump would make things a bit easier and neater too.

well ive spoken to a workshop that does bosch 040 for 195 which is 5mm smaller in diamater than standard placement pictured above, he said walbro 255's are $135 genuine but their smaller again guessing il go for the 040
with surging when using an internal pump is that due to length of the physical pump its self ? so if its shorter than the standard one id be better off mounting it somewhat lower?

also jaz_ae86 - were you using original jdm fuel lines at one stage to support big power?

Surging is usually from being low on fuel and going around a corner etc... Baffles in the tank are pretty simple and are pretty much walls installed to ensure the area around the pump has more fuel in it than the rest of the tank.

Seeing you have a jdm tank already, I'd be very surprised to see you get any form of surging if you install the new pump as low as possible to the bottom of the tank.
