    Default Diff clunk?

    Hi guys,

Over the last couple of track days/drives, my diff(?) has started to make a 'clunk' whenever i do a decent clutch-kick, or if i do a really fast gearchange. If you've driven a nissan before, it's nearly exactly the same as that subframe clunk you get with them.

My diff does whine a bit - but always has, and hasn't gotten noticeably worse recently. Google says the backlash could be off, or that trailing arm bushes could be flogged. Are there any other possibilities?

    THanks

I've had varying clunks from my diff... I had whiteline adjustable top trailing arms that shagged the thread so that between the frame and diff there was an immense amount of play, thus a clunk. Also I have a TRD 2-way which makes some noise, but it has always done this.

If it is on hard throttle or even highway speed throttle blips and clunks, I'd check all you trailing arms and bushes and while the car is up check the backlash. Even with the wheel on you should be able to tell if there's a problem.

drive along, say around 70-80 in 2nd-3rd(gear where you can play with the throttle a bit) on and off the throttle, and see how hard you actually have to load it up to get it to do it

you would think a backlash noise would happen at pretty much any speed when first getting on the throttle not just a clutch kick, I'm thinking a trailing arm bush.

I can't seem to get the noise to happen just on accel/decel, just fast gearchanges and clutch-kicks.

Getting under the car, theres some freshly exposed metal on the tunnel above the nose of the diff/end of the tailshaft. Also, the TOP trailing arm bushes seem to be pretty/very crap (i can twist them and get deflection with a small screwdriver).

My ride height hasn't really changed at all - so have the top arms deteriorated enough to make my diff hit? Is there anything else that would cause this?

if it was a worn CW/P you could get it to slap at any time..
id look at all the rear end bushes including the panhard.

nothing really else back there that can cause movement with that kind of effect.

If there's scrapes where you say above the diff housing it will most likely be the trailing arm bushes. The diff housing hits the top of the tunnel, so you might even need some ajustable arms to set pinion angle.
