    Default 20v Over Heating Problem

    Hey Guys,

    Car - AE71

    motor / part in question - Blacktop 20v Water temperature

    problem - Water temperature is getting to 100-110 deg +


    -Thermostat was replaced about a year ago as im running an external ae82 housing

    -Running stock radiator with single thermo fan that comes on at 60 deg's

    -Water pump is bt20v fan and front housing with 4ac rear housing attached

    -Radiator cap has been replaced 5 months ago

    -I run a Sam Q water cooling kit




    occurs/started when (if applicable)- Happens at low rpm e.g. Waiting on track, waiting at the lights and waiting in traffic. The water starts pumping over into the overflow bottle then the over flow bottle over flows. Which im guessing is from pressure build up? When the car is driving at high rpm it cools back down (water pump starts pumping harder and cools itself) or on the highway because of airflow.

    -When i turn the car off after driving you can hear all the pressure bubbling into the overflow
    -Once its cool i top the radiator up with approx. 1.8L of Coolant (about the same every time it happens)
    - If i take the radiator cap off leave it till it gets warm it just keeps pooring itself out, like there isnt enough force to keep it flowing threw the system and its getting stuck in the radiator


    personal situation (if applicable)-N/A

    Couple of things i though it might be:

    -Needs Jdm 16v water pump for better circulation

    -Radiator cant handle it (or its blocked up)

    -Need dual Thermo fans to keep it cool whilst stagnant

    -Water route is wrong

    -Radiator Cap Thermo spring isnt long enough, as in it doesnt even touch the seat that its supposed to sit an and the hot water is just seeping out and into the overflow.

    Water being spat out into the overflow bottle is usually a sign of your radiator gap or even your headgasket is going / gone.

    Radiator cap*?

    Hmmm though I did find a little bit of oil on the top of my bell housing...... Not looking to good. Though it still makes alright power

    Make sure you haven't got the overflow hose from the radiator to the bottle on the wrong overflow connector. Ie make sure the hose from the radiator is connected to the inlet on the overflow bottle cap, which is the one that usually has another hose running to the bottom of the bottle. Ifs it's around the wrong way, the pressure from the radiator pushes the all the water out, like an aerosol can.

    Hmmm , my guess is an air pocket. Should have a small bleed hole in the thermostat toward the top edge of the housing? Jack the car up high at the front , the back and front again .

    Is that on an ae82 thermostat?

    I dont know. I'm running a silver top with Sam Q water routing. The thermostat that came with that had a hole but too low i think it was ?? Cant remember . I did though drill another small hole.
    Air pockets are a nightmare to get rid of. My radiator is double pass and so has both inlet and outlet at the top. I actually got bleed screws installed in the upper most corners of both sides so i can bleed it properly. Once you get it sorted ad some redline water wetter just incase.

    he is using the other type of cooling kit that has a plain top water outlet and the thermstat in the external housing.

    Yes true Sam. Sorry i should have mentioned that. I still think air pocket or could be thermostat not opening . Had similar problem to yours with a BMW once. Thats what it ended up being.
