    Default AE86 Close Ratio Gearbox

Rare as hen's teeth, I know, but if anyone has one, or knows of one, I "need" it for my KE55 rally car.

    Thanks

do you have a t50 or need a whole gearbox. if you have a gearbox send it albins they do gears for them.

TRD also still make the group A close ratio gearset, pretty easy to get still.

Thanks for the reply, guys... I know the gearsets are still available, but the prices are more than my budget at the moment. Albins quoted $733 /gear ratio (ex tax). Then there's the rebuild of the gearbox on top of that, and the TRD set is around the same price.

I have one whiny standard box, and a spare box that I purchased earlier this year, that I don't know the condition of yet.

if you buy the trd ratios they include the main shaft and cluster and all of the gears slide on to the shafts
    the 4 gear set up is 3grand which is 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th

yes but you can buy seperate gears if you fuck them ,on the albins they are welded onto your shaft

plus the toyota stuff is better in my honest opinion all you need it your imput shaft every thing is supplied less bearings

I looked into this alot myself.

I found there are advantages for both TRD and Albins gear kits. TRD gear kits are set ratio's and all the gears, shafts are new except the input shaft. The TRD kit is easy to get from someone like RHD Japan for around the $2000 mark.

Glenn is right about the Albins kit, they grind the gears off, press new gears on then weld them which I thought was a little average myself. They have been doing it along time and I have never heard of there gears having problems through this process. Ablins can make 1st and 3rd gear larger in width making them stronger than the TRD kit and seems to work very well. Another advantage to the Ablins kit is they can make any ratio you want, they have many different selections and they can make a dogbox shift pattern with 1:1 on 5th instead of 4th making for a much closer ratio gearset.

If this is a full rally car either of the two kits will work well but the syncro's are always going to be an issue if you drive them hard all the time, you will be changing them quite often...Lol. The only way around the syncro issue is to go to a dogbox.

Maybe some helpful information. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the helpful advice... I'm leaning towards the TRD box... I had one back in the early 80s in my TE37 replica (KE35 base car)- the box was one of the spares for the Treunos that competed in the '75 Round Australia... it was a nice box, but finally gave up during the State Bank Discovery Trial.

I'll keep saving my pennies, and keep my eye out in the meantime.

    No worries Michael.

Its intreresting what information can be found when you start digging and going into what kits are avalible or can be made. Sounds like the TRD kit will be the way to go if you have already had experience with it before.

I went for the 3rd option to get away from the synco issues...Lol.

I did see a second hand TRD gearkit on AE86.org, maybe worth a look there.
