Default Blacktop starter motor on Westfield

Hello, new member, first post, hoping for some advice on sourcing parts and best option.

I've recently acquired a Westfield with a 20v, which is an awesome combination. As the starter motor sits under the extractors however it suffers from heat and the solinoid sticks.

Keen for some advice please on:

    - best starter motor option, replacement OE or aftermarket option
    - best value supplier/s
    - recommendations on needing to heat shield etc

    Thanks
    Westie20v

Hopefully you have a ~1kW reduction starter or something that is worthwhile. It should have a heat shield between it and the exhaust manifold but obviously this is not enough. I doubled the stock heat shield with some ACL stuff and added a square on the block between the starter. I have found that over shielding is just as bad as none as you still want some airflow around it.

If the solenoid is worn, they stick more so when hot than cold...

A couple of options are to have it rebuilt , golberg offers a service on here to rebuild them, or you can also get a new 1kw one from him as well.

Me personally, I'd ensure a relay is on the starter solenoid trigger wire ensuring the amperage given to the starter is as high as it can possibly be. Add the heat shield and if you are still having problems look into rebuilding your existing one.

    Thanks both

Being a non-std install the heat shielding is not in place, and whilst there is ample air-flow with the exhaust exiting outside the car I'll fit heat shielding. It does stick when hot not cold also. A solenoid/starter rebuild also sounds the go, but clearly aftermarket high torque units sound like an overkill with these motors.....when not sticking it starts very quickly.

    Cheers

You can get a new Denso 1kW reduction starter, like I have, from Auto Electrics Australia for $190. I'm not sure how much it costs to rebuild but with the state of my old starter I just didn't think it was worthwhile. As Matt said, a relay will do wonders with some proper heat shield.

Out of interest, is that a genuine Denso unit? Seems too cheap to be, especially if Auto Electrics Australia are selling them to the public for $190.

As an aside, the most universal problem on the Denso gear reduction units is the solenoid contacts, these are relatively cheap to replace.

I do a clean, regrease and contact replacement for $80. They are one of the few starters that are worth rebuilding these days because they're cheap to do so and you don't otherwise get lumped with a Taiwanese knock off that lasts as long as the warranty.

Certainly is. I did talk and eventually buy it off a total Celica nut at AEA, so I'm not sure if that is a discounted price.
