Yes they are both the same part number. The only way to tell what car the igniter came off is if it is still in the bracket.
the silvertop has a starter relay on the bracket, where as the black top doesn't.

tht's odd, I was told from a very reliable source that they are not and will misfire if swapped.

They share the same part number.
However, a silvertop igniter will not run a blacktop. I found that out the hard way. The one that suits the blacktop has a green sticker and is common to a 1uz
Same part number is same part... How would Toyota differentiate between orders?
I've swapped them a few times without any issues

Your right, same part number.
I've got two igniters with the same part number one came from a 20V silver top.
One came from a 1UZ and has a green sticker. I just specified the part number and to suit a 1uz if you go to toyodiy.
The same part number is listed for silvertop, blacktop 1uz and some 4runners. So theoretically they should be the same however like I said I've seen two variations and my blacktop would not run with the other variant
And what i'm saying is i have had an ignitor off a silvertop engine run on a blacktop and a blacktop run with an ignitor with a silvertop many times... And additionally, if toyota have labelled them with the same part number and can not differentiate the difference between the part numbers how would you order one for a blacktop vs silvertop in the inventory system?
By not run do you mean it wouldn't start at all? Did you earth the ignitor when you installed it? Maybe you had a faulty one, but at least 3 or 4x i've mixed the ignitors around without issues. A 16v ignitor will start the car, but won't run well.

Well as I said I ordered one to suit a 1uz which I knew would work. With the silvertop one the car would start and idle but wouldn't rev out. It would shoot flames and misfire.
New from toyota?
