I bet that it isn't releasing the pressure at the correct level. And the motor doesn't get to that level at all. Causing it to blow out the weak points. Get a new cap
Same cap that came with the alloy radiator

Im not so sure its the cap, although it may be. When I had finished building my 86 it did exactly the same thing. Would idle and rev fine but as soon as i took it for a drive the temp shot up straight away. I ended up swapping the thermostat and that fixed my problem. Also you could try drilling a 3mm hole through the thermos flange so that its constantly flowing.
Yeah hes a buddy of mine. I towed that wagon from Gympie to Brisbane after it blew a HG. Id help out with the storage but Ive got no room
Also check that the system is bled probly. Once filled with coolant, twist the cap on only to the first twist. The coolant won't leak out and the system wont pressurize. Let it run like this for a little while. Also jack the front of the car up to ensure the radiator filler hole is the highest point of the cooling system.

Hey guys,
Been thinking that if we want a bit of a project/learning about how to repair rust, my daily AE82 has a bit of surface rust popping up in the usual areas and would like to be shown/learn how to get it sorted out before it gets much worse and Im sure a few others would also like to learn. let me know.
Thanks anyways dude! I found one and now my car is going again If it was cheappp id probably just get it as a spare.
I'm sure I could share around my panel beating skills to help a few brothers get on top of there rust problems.

Hey Josh, Brett, let's get together and smash that rust. I'm bummed lately because my gearbox is unhappy with me after that night at QR (1st and 2nd are very hard to select on downshifts now) so I'm not driving my car so much but I'm keen to get into some bodywork. Just name a time and place.
Luke, glad you found the part. I would have been able to source you one but it would have taken a while to get here. Give me a heads up next time.
