shims are just for reducing brake noise, you can do without them but the brakes might squeel a bit. Buy some brake quiet from Repco for $5
Its a newb stupid question but I have to ask. I lost one of the shims for my front brake pads. I bought new pads for adm ae86 calipers (DB398). New pads have some sort of rubber or viynal backing on them, say the thickness of black gaffa tape. Im thinking this is the equivalent of a shim? The 1 shim I have here is less then a 1mm thick anyway. The back of the old pads are just a flat metal surface. Just want to know if I can do away with using shims.

Cheers Ben, will head to repco tomorrow.
never used "brake quiet" not a big fan myself, running them with out the shims will be fine, you will find after some heavy braking that layer on the pads(like gaffa tape) will be cut out from the piston
