    Default Play/Vibration in Throttle Body

    Car - KE70

motor / part in question - 4AGE Throttle Body

problem - Play/Vibration in Throttle Body when engine is around 3000RPM

    Hello all,

Since I have had my 4AGTE engine I have always had a bit of play in the throttle body which leads to a loud vibrating/buzz when the car is around 2800-3000RPM. It isn't a major problem by any means, hence why it has been like that for 1.5 years, but it is something that has been in the back of my mind waiting to be asked, just that I have never bothered!

Like I said, it is not a huge issue, but it is definitely something that I'd prefer NOT to have as it makes my car sound like it is falling apart. Especially annoying when 3000RPM is about 80KM/H in my car and I often have to sit at that speed in traffic.

My question is, has anyone else had such an issue with this, and/or could it be possibly related to the fact that my throttle body is rotated 90º to how they are normally mounted? (Throttle wheel is horizontal)

I know I could rotate the throttle body to see if that makes a difference, but it is a lot of work if it is not going to help. TPS wires would be too short etc.

Just hoping somebody could shed some light into this, and what my best option is. (Rebuild throttle body/find new throttle body/rotate throttle body if that may help)

    Thanks for reading,

    -Alex

Probably has play in the shaft, it might resonate around 3k. I'd have a look at the throttle cable linkage and see whether it has any push-pull movement or worn butterfly shaft bore. It should have a little push-pull play but nothing else.

    I could be over-reacting though!

edit: Just re-read the OP, if you've turned it so the shaft is vertical I would say the little play it should have is cause problems. You'll probably flog it out.

Haha yeah I am 100% certain! Definitely was a wtf moment when I realised it was from there.

Hmm... It definitely has push/pull play in the shaft. I never did the original mounting of the throttle body but thinking about it now, I can see how it could flog out being rotated. I'll pull my finger out on the weekend and rotate it to the "normal" position and see how it goes!

    Reporting in for an update:

    PROBLEM SOLVERED!

Was a bit of a mission, but I eventually spun the throttle body back to how it should be. It did involve me having to cut the flange off the plenum and rotating that 90º, lengthening TPS wires, and making new throttle cable mount, but in the end it was worth it. Obviously having the throttle body rotated was the cause of the vibration

Wishing I had done this 12 months ago though...
