Yea apparently they shift heaps smoother, doesnt bother me much but, go for the gear and hope it gets it
The other option is 2k(cheap)-2.5k-3k for dog box + shipping form USA. Get an auto lancer bellhousing and make an adaptor plate. Then figure out what to do with clutch. Yeah, you're looking at at least 3k + a lot of design time so 1250 isn't that bad at all.
The only downside is you gotta deal with is that it's an R-series transmission (do these things shift any better than an R154?) and short ratios. and the other problem, that you face with most factory gearboxes, is synchros. (I hate synchros)

I was of the understanding all the R series Toyota boxes are the same...sharing alot of common parts outside of the ratio differences...thus making them junk...I've seen more smashed R154 gearboxes in tassie in the last 18 months than I have t50's or sr20 gearboxes...they are designed for light trucks, not exactly a performance cars

The R154 comes in the Turbo Supra (Im no expert but most typically rate it as a performance car).
Im off to the wrecking yard this weekend to try and piece the last few bits together wish I lived back on the west coast where old imports were plentiful where I am now sucks what did get brought here got crushed and not kept in the yards.
that it did, but not it's original destination...it was designed for small trucks and the size of the gears/syncros are obvious to the fact...they are far from a smooth gearbox and I'm not sure anyone had ever had one that had a trouble free 3rd gear
behind a 4Gxx motor you might well be fine but being behind the J motors averaging ~260rwkw+ they are tearing them apart even after being beefed up with the marlin crawler catalogue...
a growing trend seems to be fitting RB25 boxes behind xJZ motors for the above reasons...
For sake of further arguement...I present the Toyota R series gearbox family...remembering they share ALOT in common
Pick the odd one out...
Truck, truck, truck, 4wd, truck, 4wd...oh shit toyota supra...
I suspect you might find more help on a US based forum also...if you didn't notice this is mainly Australian based...

beleive the R155, use triple cone syncro's to try and make them smoother
