Interesting question...
4age - has always been considered the performance head, free high reving motor
4afe - economy head which doesn't flow as well.
I wonder how a high comp 4afe would run
hey guys im not really sure.... this is kind of a noob question, Buuuuut! whats the point in putting a 4age head on a 7afe block? why not just keep the 7afe head? is the 4age head better? i have no idea how because both heads have 4 valves to a cyl both are DOHC? whats the point? (: thannnnnks.

Where could you get a 7afe? Are they easy to come by?
have seen some american vids of modded 4afe's vs 4age's... and the economy head wons
7afe's are all over the place, AE101's, AE92 RV's etc..

Also because a 4age head is alot easier to run in rwd format compared to 7afe
Even in fwd form, most still do the AGE head...

I've been told by several people who have done the development that the 7afe head has a lot more potential than any of the 4age heads do. Just you can use the ge head and just bolt on water fittings to be rwd, instead of having the design and make stuff up to get it to work. And everyone says the ge head is the better one, so everyone just follows that idea...
I can remember a similar discussion years ago where Bill Sherwood espoused the view that a particular generation 4AFE has the head with the most potential.
My understanding of the situation:
- GE head is better out of the box and has heaps of aftermarket support
- FE head (well some of them) have a better fundamental design (angle of port toward valve, etc) so will end up better if you go all out. But given the lack of aftermarket you'll be looking af lots of custom stuff.
However I have no real data or experience to back it up.
As above, I was going to make a high performance FE head but my idea shut down shortly after Kelford cams in QLD did because no one could sell me some rewelded cams for much less than $1000.
People fit the 7afe bottom end to a 4age because firstly their readily available and good later model 4age cranks are not- well second hand anyway. Then they are also meant to shift the max power being generated so it happens about 1000rpm sooner, so more driveable

Would 4age cams drop into a 4afe head with the right prep? or are they totally different setups?
