    Default mcBens lazy 86 rebuild

So I've had my 86 for about a year now, and things haven't been moving as swiftly as I would have hoped. This is mostly due to being lazy, but also playing pro bball, travelling, uni etc..

Bought it impulsively from Sydney from some dude who is most definitely blind and also has a hearty diet of bog. It looked like this -

the guy told me it was rust free, and after getting it in Adelaide I was pretty mad to find heaps of it straight away..

    such as -

    You get the idea..

However, after bitching about it for approximately a month I decided to fix it.

Which brings me to the happenings of the last 6 months of working on this car.. (took me like 3 months to strip it down, classic)

    I had previously never:
    -picked up an angle grinder
    -picked up a welder
    -seen rust this horrific
-done any sort of car bodywork

this is how it sits currently, rust free just about

bit of light surface rust in photos due to cleaning so it doesn't look as nice as possible.. but still

Plan from here is to paint the underbody and engine bay with Kbs so it looks and feels super mint. After that I will repaint/refurbish/replace all the parts and put it back together hopefully. The respray job was average so it has orange peeling, but it might buff out.

Thankyou sirs, many questions to come

Epic effort mate! I looked at heaps of cars (not just ae86) before I bought mine and the old "nah she's rust free mate" is a classic! One Escort I went and looked at was freshly sprayed, the young bloke that owned it told me he'd cut the rust out and plated it. His old man said it had never had rust in it. When we looked at it they had literally painted over the rust in places and the door jam had a hole in it you could've seen from across the street.

Glad you're persevering mate, it will mean so much more to you when you can stand back and say "I did that"

Top marks for effort mate, my bit of advice is get a Nolathane bush kit it pretty much replaces every bush and should only be around $150, dont listen to people telling u to get Super Pro they are better but only ever so slightly and at least twice the price, there is a guy on here who sells them Sundee or somthng any ways the best $150 you will ever spend on ur car, i thought somthing was broken on my car then i put those bushes in, the difference is amazing mabe since yours has been off the road for so long u wont feel it as much but ye so good

Well done on your efforts, Ben. I think rebuilding an 86 is one of life's more enjoyable things. Sure, finding all that rust sucks and it sucks even more when the seller bullshits to you (my second 86 was like that, well, not quite as bad as yours but same old story, "there's only a little bit of surface rust"). I don't think there's such a thing as a rust free 86 for sale. I think what people mean when they advertise 'rust free' is the rust comes free with the car, at no extra cost.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pics of the build as it progresses.

    Wise ^

Anyway thanks for the kind words fellas, good motivation. As for the bushes, most look pretty new so I'll just reuse them, might just get Trd ones to replace the few that are worn. Ive heard the nolathane bushes wear out in 2 years..?

The seller of mine actually guaranteed it was rust free so I probably could have taken him to court, cbf though. It's just sad people are that dishonest. All for the best though, have leant many things

This happened in the last week. Love how paint nicely brings together all the hard work. Interior done with a thin layer of sound deadener to tidy things up and absorb at least 1 db

Ah, it's such a good feeling when your car has fresh paint. Well done mate and good on you for sticking with it.
