Default Ae86 4age conversion wont start!!

    Hey guys,

Im in the process of converting my ADM AE86 to 4AGE, the motor is a standard bigport from an AE82. where I'm at at the moment is my car will crank and the fuel pump will prime but it will not spark to fire it.

when you set the ignition to the "on" position the spark plug sparks once. obviously it should not spark at all unless you are cranking.. which is doesnt spark.
My dad and I have checked the distributor, coil and ignitor and all are in spec for voltage, resistance etc. my motor has all correct earths and we have tried 3 different ECU's all to no avail. My dad used the 4AGE into ADM 86 wiring thread aswell yet still nothing. This car is making me crazy and I feel I am chasing my tail trying to fix this thing. So if anyone at all could give me some advice for extra things to check/tip,tricks that would be amazing. p.s I have checked all fuses etc and it is all ok.

    Do you have power at:

    The ECU memory wire (white?)
    ECU ignition power wires (black/red)
The coil/ignitor power (black orange) (I'd think so if it's sparking)
    The injector power wire.

Do the fuel injectors pulse when cranking?

Has someone played with the distributor wiring? The colours should not match on either sides of the plug.

Get an oscilloscope and check the output of the cas. A multimeter set to frequency function will also be able to tell you if there is an output or not.

    Start there.

We tried all of that and it has power at all of them, there is a red wire coming from the body that used to connect to the ballast resistor when the car was 4AC, do you know anything about that wire? also we tested for engine codes and it is putting out code 3, which is no ignition signal.

That red wire is a 12v start wire intended to give the coil a "full" 12v while cranking. Ignore it.

If it's code 3 then you should have said that first. it's the cas in the distributor for sure or something related to it like the wiring. I take it you have STA hooked up for it to detect that it's cranking? Or are they smart enough to know that it's cranking by watching MAP signal?

So then the relevant question is, has anyone touched the distributor wiring? Do you get a signal out of the CAS with an oscilloscope? Continuity between the ECU plug and distributor plug?

    thanks for that,

sorry that I forgot to mention the engine fault code in the first post, everything is connected such as the starter etc, I removed a distributor out of my friends AE86 that was running and fitted it into my car but I had the same problem as before. In your opinion does it sound like a wiring issue possibly?

There should be a start signal wire (STA) coming out of the ecu that u will need to connect to the starter wire (thick black with white trace) the ecu should then recognize that the car is cranking over and fire spark and fuel. Also check ur spark plugs arnt fowled.

Code 3 is no NE signal so you can rule out ignitor and STA, for now. Car will start and run fine without STA anyway. Nice to have but not essential for starting and post start (via cold start injector)

It's like you're not reading what I'm posting or something.

the wiring from the distributor to the ecu SHOULD be ok, as I pulled the entire motor out of a running AE82. so apart from fitting it to my 86 the wiring has not been fiddled with, only the 14 pin plug on the ecu has been suited to ae86

Get a jump wire and put 12v directly onto the +ve of the coil and then see if it runs.
