It should ideally be pointing down. The stock oil cooler is a low pressure system ie the plate will bleed off a small amount of oil when the pressure rises high enough.
hi guys,
stupid question of the week here...
with the standard toyota oil cooler sandwich plate on 4age...does it matter if the sandwich plate is pointing "up"...
as in the snout of the oil cooler is on an upwards angle?
i put it on today and didnt want to cut the tab off, so i have rotated it so that i didnt need to, just want to make sure that this isnt going to cause any issues...
yes yes, i know jack shit about engines
cheers

Mine is horizontal, never had an issue.
I can't it being an issue, it is under pressure after all. Although I am not an expert

Sorry, I'll clarify that a bit. The banjo fitting going to the cooler should ideally be pointing downwards so gravity also helps it feed down to the cooler and then down to the sump. The actual housing itself will not make much of a difference. These are very different to full flow/pressure systems so every bit helps.
Eddie.
