Default T50 Input Shaft end play

    Hey guys!

currently in the middle of a T50 swap & clutch job on an 86 and came across something that has me more or less stumped. I keep running into conflicting/non-specific answers and I was hoping someone could shed some light on the topic.

I dropped the box out of my car which had symptoms of a bad input shaft bearing & some synchro issues. Now I have another JDM T50 which will be going in (in favour of the bell housing and slave position) and I'll take the previous owner's word that it didn't have any issues. With both the boxes out in front of me, I noticed that there was a more noticeable amount of end play (in and out & side-to-side) on the replacement box compared to the one I took out. Basically, both of them exhibit play, but if I were to make a guess I would say the difference is approximately <0.5mm play VS ~1.0mm play. The box I took out does feel tighter overall.

Now I plan to do the usual spigot and thrust bearing as well as input and output seals for the transmission before it goes in, but does the end play in the input shaft have any implications? What's the actual reason for the end-play and which parts of the box does it relate to?

    Any help appreciated! Cheers

If you remove the release bearing sleeve there is a shim behind it. The manual states what play there should be and various size shims are available.

    Thanks for that!
I removed both the bearing retainer plates and inspected the shims. I have yet to pull out the shims but the same play is present on both boxes even with the retainer plates off. The play looks to be in the shaft itself as I can see the input shaft bearing moving back and forth along with the shaft. It doesn't move the shim at all.

Do i even need to worry?

This can happen when someone doesn't run a spigot bearing. I am getting the price checked on an input bearing, they don't look too expensive at about $90 each. I don't know if the box needs to come apart to change it or if ignoring the slop will cause an issue. If you are running any sort of reasonable power through it then I suggest changing it though.

from what I can gather it seems like the box does need to come apart (which I was hoping to avoid).

Im hoping this box will be alright at least until i can thoroughly refresh the spare box on the side.

    Any other thoughts?

Your going to have to ask someone who knows a lot more than me. I have also made a request for the availability of the gasket kit which is pretty cheap. However synchros and bearings aren't.
