OP, If your diff takes 5k rpm to move then loosen off the pinion nut.
Solved. But yes welded centers are not good for anything other then paddock bashing

If it is hard to take off then the diff is welded wrong. Possibly got spatter on the crown/pinion (cue photo from 4WD forum of "welded diff" with crown fully welded to pinion).

For cheap you can get a new centre and weld it properly (though S series centres are a pain to weld) or you can pay the piper and get a T series LSD.

But to reiterate, the symptoms you list aren't typical of a welded diff.

Having to rev to 5 grand is not right.
    Something screwy goin on there.

Series 1 drum brake T18 Zenki T series can be bough cheaply enough, if you are patient they do pop up.
Not all Toyota forums want the kind of money you see them on here for.
A new 2 way LSD center with no crown or pinion will set you back ~1000 new (give or take ~200 either way)

Tailshaft needs to be considered also. This can vary depending on what gear box you want to use.
Either way 1-2K is a fair estimate for a set up.
If you don't want to spend this sort or coin, a spooled S series is a viable option if welding is considered to geto for you.

or welded side gears, but done with some care.

    are some options

Could be something as simple as your handbrake locking on

^^ Agreed. I've had a daily with a locked diff for probably about 5 years all up. They are cheap, cheerful and fun.
