I've been taking them since I got my first toy digicam. Its pretty easy, just follow these steps.

    1. Use a tripod and point at where the most activity is.

    2. Set a long shutter speed. (my first camera could only do 3 second exposures, but still got a few good shots).

    3. Set focus at infinity (manual, or use landscape mode if you have to)

    4. Scream at chosen deity like Lieutenant Dan on the shrimpin boat while pressing shutter button repeatedly

    5. Laugh maniacally when you capture that awesome shot and live!

Mine were taken out in the country, so the lightning was the only light source. Yours have all that background light from the city and the port, so everything looks orange.

You could close down the aperture to reduce unwanted background light and help prevent the lightning from being overexposed.

The lightning in your shots is also illuminating an area of heavy rain, making it too bright and blurry.
