Default Where are all the 86's

    So

A few years back when i had my hachi, you could go on carsales and there were 10-15 86's for sale at any one time.

Fast forward to today..... 2, there are 2 sprinters for sale..... thats it.

    Where have they call gone?

Have they all been butchered to make dwift karz! or are those who have them the "true collectors", who are now in it for the long haul?

Initial D is finished, and drifting now seemingly requires horsepower figures in the 4 digits, so the humble hachi is now overlooked for a competitive drift package.

I have been toying with the idea for a year or so, if the right car came up i would possibly buy another hachi, do it differently, learn from my mistakes.
I passed over a black and grey Trueno fresh off the boat before, and i didn't have the funds available for Prime86's Trueno out of WA (which funnily enough i think is now somewhere in Sydney)

Anyway... just thought i would throw the question out there.

PS, if you do own this car and are thinking of a change... Let me know

I noticed the same thing - when I bought mine 2.5 years ago there weren't a lot going around, but still 3 for sale within 2 hours drive of me.

I think they are a few reasons there aren't as many for sale. Firstly there just aren't as many. They've rusted out or been crashed beyond repair. I'd say with parts prices being so high a few that might have been repairable probably got parted instead of repaired.

Also, I think a lot of the guys (and girls) who own them now are a bit older, maybe have more disposable income/more stability in their lives and therefore are less likely to need/want to sell them. If you look at how many Ford Escorts there are for sale you'll see a similar pattern. The people that have them are in no hurry to part with them. And the lure of getting big money isn't there like it is with older muscle cars, etc. where prices are going up a crazy amount

It also seems that as the owners mature a lot less of them are ending up bashed against stuff as drift cars, and more seem to be lobbing up to other, more traditional driving events, or as you've said, being held onto by "true collectors" who want to preserve them

Also there are probably a lot of lazy sods like myself that have a project Ae86 that is taking years to complete but are too stubborn to ever give up and sell

Would love a GT Apex Trueno... however they are few and far between.

Would love to know where cars are at these days..... the guy that bought mine doesnt have a build thread, so i have no idea what he did with it or where it is.

Saw the same when I went looking for a decent one a little while ago...
So just ordered from home base and got what I wanted for a reasonable price in a good time frame.

I do lob out to events but not many though as work, time etc and not wanting to bash it against a wall are all factors.
It gets a cheeky block run each few weeks but that is mostly it, more often then not I am happy with it in the shed and I pull the cover off with the others n a few beers with bonnets up and a fiddle etc of a Weekend night makes for good times.

Done with cruising to things now days and good with doing my own thing.
Correct on selling too, it is totally a case of not hurry to get rid of it mixed with the in the for long haul now thing too.
Love my panda and its cranky noise! haha!

I believe there are a handful of forum members who own more than 5 ae86's and I think they are partially to blame for the shortage in them..

On a serious note tho, allot that could have been saved have been cut up by people who see a rust hole around the quarter glass and think OMG my car is not worth repairing and they rip it apart. There are also opportunistic people who live in suburbs like Merrylands who buy up a heap, pull them apart in their back yard and charge a premium for parts. An aerial for instance around the $100 mark.

There is also the factor that most people who own them have spent a heap on restoring them, engine conversions etc and will most likely keep them for life.

Another thing I guess which does influence it is the number of Facebook groups out there, I know of at least 10 within Australia to sell ae86 parts. This effectively scatters the cars / parts because kids today think the internet evolves around FB and don't really know much different.

The good cars are out there though, you've just got to look for them
