    Default Diff options

    Hi everyone,

I am currently doing a 3SGE beams blacktop conversion on my ae86.
It has a JDM Zenki T series diff in it (T282) With a TRD 2way 4.7 centre.
I was curious to know the power output that these can handle (torque rating) to see if it was worth while upgrading to a F series diff.
While on the subject of F series diff, i understand there is a lot of info out there, but im just to stupid enough to understand it coming from Nissan ( where everything is interchangeable across all chassis)

If someone with experience on this subject could shed some light for me, if my current diff would be enough or if an upgrade would be recommended.

What the car has and will be used for:
    3SGE BEAMS BLACKTOP
    J160
    ORC 309 clutch
    Blacktop ITB
    Street driven, occasional drift days

If you just street it and never really stretch its legs the T series would manage, just, for a couple of months. Factor in some drift days you're always going to have failures. Id be looking to sell the nice diff you have asap and build something as similar a spec as possible with F series parts. Your new engine has a similar rev limit but more torque. I dare say a 4.3:1 F rear end is what you need. There are similarly designed 2 way trd mechanical lsds out there for the rs200 you can use, or if on a budget I really don't mind the Type 2 torsen that comes factory in the rs200 (which I used). There are 4.3 ratios on these diffs too if you look around, so you could buy a whole centre from an rs200 and hopefully get all the bits you want as far as gears and lsd go. Its a good diff being a type 2, less prone to failures, but still not quite as tuneable as a clutch type for drift as its got its own preset TBR and you cannot shim it to my knowledge to change it like you can a clutch type to tighten to taste.

The housing will need to be shortened unless you can find an mx13 diff. They are pretty rare and these days finding one is hard, and usually involves decommissioning a sweet looking mx13. Anyhow, there are other f rears in taragos, so maybe get one of those and shorten it, then add ae86 mounts which can be sourced off a ke70 borg diff which is often free as most drifters in the Toyota scene have them as yard ornaments.

The s series handbrake cables will make drums work as long as your diff is no longer than mx13, which is actually 6mm overall width wider than ae86 diff by my measurements, but effectively it makes little difference.

    Heres my diff for inspiration:

Thanks for your response, I spent a bit more time researching and surprisingly i found a fair few MX13 diffs for sale, the one i went with came with F series tailshaft to suit j160 in ae86 which worked out perfectly.
I has OS Giken 2 way with 4.1 ratio, also comes with spare 3.9 ratio centre, Wilwood brakes and all braided lines with ae86 brakes, new corona discs.

Def go F! Wont have to worry about ever breaking axles. Also much bigger crown and pinion of course, more fluid resivoir etc etc. Good choice.
