    Default The AE86 Turdbox Build

Just bought my first 86 for $1K. It's an 1985 SR5 Zenki Coupe that I'm currently working on. Figured I should have a place to document the whole build as I'm going to be wrenching on this thing 5 days a week, 3 hours a day, so let's get on with it.

I bought the car for $1K, and this was it's state upon bringing it home:

The majority of the car was there, fenders, bumper, bash bar, etc. I had the spare 4A-C in the truck bed. I brought it over to the shop the next day. In it's current state I've swapped the original 4-AC for the spare since the original motor had spun a few bearings, it slipped in nicely:

After that I got to bolting the fenders and most of the trim back on:

At the moment, I need to bolt the flex plate back onto the torque converter, bolt the bellhousing on, test compression, oil, ignition, fuel, etc, and hopefully it will become my daily. Obviously I do need parts to finish off, all in good time. I am making this my daily since I'm still just a 17 year old finishing up high school, so a ridiculous swap like a BEAMS or Blacktop 4AGE might be out of place for me, however I wouldn't mind trying a Bluetop or Redtop swap down the road, all I need is a T50 and some patience. More updates next week.

Finally got the torque converter lined up with the flex-plate and it's getting bolted in, what a pain. I had to grind a small horse-shoe hole next to the starter motor hole because it's damn near impossible to get the bolts in with a ratchet. Next step is to torque it all down and start wiring her up. After that, it's just getting it some fuel, and getting it running.

I also just purchased a set of speakers for it, I went with two 4" Pioneers for the dash. The original deck is long gone so I'm using an old Toyota AD6400 Tape Deck from my Paseo along with a set of 6.5" Sony Xplods for the rear speakers. Hopefully it gets a decent sound since music is one of my favorite things while driving.

She won't start, I suspect the starter or battery since I hear a click and the lights flicker inside the car. I know the engine turns as well since I can spin it at the crank.

Power to the starter was not hooked up properly, but it cranks!

The radiator and transmission lines are all connected, all that's left is coolant, fuel lines, & brakes!

The past few weeks I relined the tank, cleaned the fuel lines, and installed new rubber lines. The car is still struggling to idle however and the culprit is most likely the stock carburetor. At the moment I have the car moved in the other direction while I decide whether to rebuild the old carb or buy a Weber kit:

I made a block off plate for the EGR Valve and also blocked off the port coming from the exhaust, pics to come soon. In the meantime, I'm eyeballing a proper Zenki bumper for the car complete with the original brackets and lights with a minor amount of damage, waiting on the shipping quote:

Also heading out on a trip this weekend to pickup my 4AGE engine. Everything is coming together smoothly.

Finally had a chance to head out and buy a huge lot of parts for the car:

I was able to grab a driver's side seat, kouki headlight garnishes, uncracked center console door, and the best part, an original Bluetop Twincam 4AGE 16 Valve with stage II clutch. I went ahead and repainted the valve covers to give it a refresh:
