hey guys my car with a freshly built 4agte seems to be blowing lots of white/blue smoke when its cold, once up to temp its fine. the engine has only done 1000kms and i wanna know if its normal or not? and what would be causing the problem.

Check your oil condition and water condition. White smoke is usually water burning, therefore a blown head gasket or the like. With the blue smoke, this is usually burning oil so if the engine is new I would firstly be checking my turbo and lines. Check all your fitting are round the right way aswell Ive seen that done before. Most new motors will make some unruly smoke but not too much to worry even the least experienced person.

if the motor has been rebuilt (properly assuming) and already done the magic 1000kms then it shouldnt be blowing smoke. infact it shouldnt be blowing smoke after the 1st start up really.

seems like it might be burning oil while cold, until it heats up and reaches correct tolerance.... could be turbo, could be rings?

check the basics, check water levels, if they drop find out why (if theres a oil or its burning water etc.). check oil, make sure its good colour/consistancy, and see how much if any its burning each day.

how new is the turbo? car runs, makes boost fine?

Has it been blowing smoke for the 1000km's? or just started?

Did you overheat it at any stage after the rebuild?

If the turbo oil seal would be stuffed, it would smoke after the engine heats up, and the oil becomes thinner, not before. Unless after you turn the car off, the thin hot oil goes though the seal, into your exhaust, and then burn next time you start it.

Who did the rebuild? Might be a good idea to ask them.

Were the valve stem seals replaced?

How long does it blow the smoke for?

I'd check your turbo first. Pull the dump pipe off and check for oil as i had the same problem with mine and ended up being a blown turbo. It was exactly like Dazzla's blowing smoke

thanks for the help guys. i brought the turbo set-up off beau. think its only a few months old. the valve stems were replaced and everything is fresh.

it blows smoke for the first probably 5 minutes. i dont think its the turbo because like you said it only does it when its cold.

the temp has never been above half or even near it.

its really pissing me off now cos i have spent all this money and its blowing smoke on me!!

during the first 500kms i took it fairly easy, loading the engine up hills and never reving it out. the last 500kms i have slowly been increasing the load but still never reving it out. never let it idle for long periods and no freeway driving.

also could this be caused by having it too rich? cos my fuel pressure it high and i think its running a lil rich??

    cheers

Just throwing it out there: possible the oil feed/return lines aren't the right sizes, causing the turbo to burn oil.

unsure of the feed size but the return is 19mm that reducers near the bottom to fit over the stock oil cooler return fitting. just interested in why it would cause it to burn oil?

Your turbo feed only needs a dash 3 or 4 size hose. Your drain needs to be about dash 10 or maybe 12 with no restrictions or reducers. If it can't drain back quick enough or it's getting too much it'll just sit in there and burn away
