Whilst this video isn't that good, it does highlight how if you hit next to the dolly , it will bring the metal up and if u hit where the dolly is , it'll push the metal down.
One really basic thing most people get automatically and don't need to have it explained to them ,is that a dent is just the metal being stretched. You can only stretch the metal so far. Have u ever lent on a roof of a car or a panel where it pops in / out?

To name one case of popping panels,bonnets are affected due to engine bay heat and that can cause a popping panel.
Then shrinking comes into play.
Either you shrink it with cherry spotting or use a shrinking hammer, sort of looks like a meat mallet.
