    Default Catch can routing

Probably a stupid question, just after some thoughts.

When installing a catch can, should I run a hose from the PCV and the cam cover breather to the catch can or just the cam cover and leave the PCV as it is into the throttle body? And theoretically I could run the outlet of the ISCV that's meant to run back to the standard intake surge tank to the catch can as well, correct?

Not sure on 20v's but on mine, 16v, it goes from cam cover to catch then catch can to PCV (in theroy...). The PCV is a oneway valve running only vacuum which sucks the crank case ventaltion into the intake manifold to meet emissions, as apposed to venting atmospherically via a draft tube, which is not so legal...

Yeah my 16v one is completely illegal, runs from cam cover to catch can, and then catch can runs a hose(assuming this is the hose that's meant to go back to intake manifold, or to a filter) the length of the car and finishes at the bumper, haha. And has a drain back to the sump at the bottom.

So the PCV requires vacuum pressure to operate it and shouldn't be routed to the catch can as a dump? I was just thinking under the theory you didn't want any seedy air going back into the throttle body if it was possible therefore only routing the cam breather to the catch can was only doing half the job.

Well, once upon a time there was no crankcase ventilation and this would cause moto's to seep oil through gaskets etc due to the blow by. What you had on your 16v is ideal, it is not legal however! PCV is an emissions control device so you should run it in a system, even with the catch can it can still work.

From motor -> catch can -> from catch can -> intake manifold

The catch can will "catch" oil and blow by, from there the intake vacuum pulls any gas left over, in the catch can, to be burnt through the combustion chamber.

Yeah wicked, I just wasn't sure if vacuum was required to activate the PCV valve. Will just set it up as before using a filter or back to the manifold. I don't like the idea of maybe dropping any oil on the road for people following me, haha. Just have to tap a return into my sump now then.

    Cheers.

Yep, return line is the go, should do it on my car but I've only got a shitty little cusco catch can!

Leave the pcv connection and valve intact.

Run a hose from top cover breather to your can and if your motor pops the dipstick up a bit to let gasses out at high rpm then you can put a hose on the dipstick tube also.

No need to drain back, the oil that comes out is feral and contains water vapours.

Whatever Matt says regards to 20v's. I don't run it back to the manifold because it's creamy and clogs shit up.

Id have one off the dipstick and one off the top cover breather on any engine. Not specifically 4ages, but any engine you will drive hard. Cams and road laws state only that the dipstick must be installed in the car, they do not mention where.
