If you care about your paint work, get a heat gun out and heat the lip area so it doesn't crack the paint easily when you "edit" it.

and if your going to be hitting the lip from the inside with a hammer. make sure you put a brick or a block of wood on the outside of the lip (protect your paint by wrapping it in a rage). that way you wont deform the guard itself, you will only hit the lip up against the block of wood.
also one thing i noticed when i was bashing mine up yesterday, when you fold the lip up it creates a crevice where dirt and moisture can sit. which equals....RUST!!!
so i had an idea, of drilling some holes in the bend of the lip, so if any moisture collects it will attempt to let it out. i dunno how well its gonna work, ill give it a go this arvo....

Really you should be doing it with a person holding the pole, but i have no friends.

yeah standard ae86 guards have some sort of tacky/sticky shit inside the lip try get rid of that beforeu lip guards, thats what keeps inside moist and ends up rusing from inside to out

using a pole will never get good results. as you will struggle to get the lip folded out of the way with out damading, or pulling the guard out further then you want
using a guard roller you can push that lip all the way up and in without really pulling the guard out at all. and if done right wont wreck your paint.
otherwise i'de use the hammer/dolly approach, takes longer, will wreck paint but will get better results then a pole.
pm me if you want more info/someone to do it for you.

after i rolled an flared my rears, i ground back the inside as best i could, an put a big smear of rtv silicon all the way down to the bottom of the fold, then neatly blended it in. This way no water should get in or out under ur lip
just need to go nice an slow when doing it too, stretch the metal slowly not too quick. aim for about an hours of hitting each side, its not a 5 minute job

I've never had a drama using a wooden baseball bat wedged up against an old rim, with a heatgun/hairdryer to stop the paint from cracking, keeps it smooth and even the whole way around.. not many people are good(patient) enough with a hammer to do a nice even job
