Are the ae86 Steering racks the same as the ae71?
Or can I put an ae86 steering rack in place of an ae71 one but still use the ae71 steering column?
Someone must have done this. I am too busy to rip apart mine just to try.

i recomend getting the superpro rack mount bushes too from ajps. will make the steering sharper and more precise.

is there anyway to tell whether you have an 86 or ae71 rack externally?

Beat BIGM with it. If its ae86 he will gain a tooth, if its not he will loose one ! HAHA.

i got my rack rebuilt by a company that does the deal of give them your old and lots of money and they give you a new one. Maybe its the same with the steering column. I will suss it out at work tomorrow and get back to you unless someone knows the answer now.

One has a XX-10 and the other has XX-30 on it. KE70 is 30 and AE86 is 10, I THINK.

They all look the same, and the fellow above is correct about the 30/10 writing as my photo confirms.

Also, in regards to the extra tooth, the ae86 rack is around 9mm longer, and when moved to the full lock position displays an extra tooth, so id say this is 100% true. Remember that ke70 steering atrms are around 9mm shorter that standard ae86 ones, so they create the extra lock that way. i think you would find a ke70 with a stock front suspension setup would have a touch more lock than a stock ae86 with manual arms and rack, despite the extra tooth. Not that it matters cause ae71 struts arent worth pursuing.

The quaife measures the same as the ae86, as it should since thats what it replaces.

Also, notice the different teeth on the quaife rack.

I dont see how the amount of teeth would limit the travel when its the tie rod ends hitting the rack itself that cause the "full lock"

The actual steel bar that is the rack is longer. Therefore it can displace further.
