ive done some searching, google - toymods etc , found some topics but nothing that answers the question. weather or not i get an answer i am heading back to pick n payless tomorrow with and ae86 RCA and knuckle.
with some verniers, tape measure and a piece of wood this is what i found.
distances measured bolt center to center
KPI - i measured this by placing a piece of (straight) timber virtically flush on the hub mounting face and measured the distance between it and the strut tube in a straight line
AE86:
bottom strut bolts - 85mm
insert - 51mm
caliper mount spacing - crap
KPI - 7.9'
ST-141
bottom strut bolts - 90mm
insert - 48mm? (was a tight fit on the verniers)
caliper mount spaceing - 100mm (cast)
KPI - 8.0'
MX73
Bottom strut bolts - 90mm
insert - 48mm? (again couuldnt get a good measurment - strut OD 50mm
caliper mount spacing - 100mm (cast type like 141)
KPI - 9.3'
NOw using custom Techno Toy steering knuckles - ( special order 90mm bolt spacing)
i can mount ST141 or MX73 struts to ae86 LCA's
Nissan caliper will bolt straight up!
S14/R32/R33 ETC

isnt the ae86 "bottem strut bolts" 85mm apart? im pretty sure they are, as i was planning on using ae86 RCA in my ra60 struts which have a 90mm spacing, obviously they wouldnt fit.

why do you want to use 86 knuckles? apparently mx cressy knuckles are really short
sundee
5th September 2009, 10:52 PM
they looked pretty long to me.. longer than 86 items anyway

MX73 cressy knuckles are way longer than Cressida.
You can do MX73 struts, with RA60 PS arms, for a very strong stubaxle with reasonable KPI.
Better again is RA60 PS arms with SA63 struts (RA60 might be the same), as they have a better KPI than at least the MA61 struts.

Thats the proper way of measuring KPI

Im using TA63 struts with PWR stering arms. Everything so far seems to be the same as RA60.

I think the big difference is between the MA61 struts and the Celica X6 struts.

Nice link TAkai, im gonna get me one of the from bunnings!
because pick a part didnt have all the "ideal toyota" for me to look at.
what other struts have a similar KPI to 86, use 86 steering knuckles and have a caliper mount casted the same as mx73 or st141? (100mm spacing)

if you want big brakes go for the mx73 gear. use the ra60 power steering arms as the cressy ones are long as.
r33 front calipers bolt up
and then u can use 296x16mm(i think) disks with some machining.
have a look on the cressida forums for more info.

ohh yeahhh my problem has been solved and guys u might want in on this!!
just got off the email to GIA/GABe at TechnoToy,
They are doing a custom Run of their steering knuckles to fit 86 ball joints with a 90mm strut mount spacing!!
that means u can now run MX73 RA60 etc struts and still have 86 LCA/XT130 etc LCA's
Score, anyone else want some while their at it? this is a custom run, and i need answers by tomorrow, prices are same as old knuckles on their web site
$120USD + shipping IF your in NSW check out the group buy in the SYD section if u want in!

I thought you could always run ae86/xt130 LCA's with the RA60 steering knuckle. I originally was running standard ae71 LCA's with TA63 (RA60) struts and pwr steering knuckles. Bolted up fine no fitment problems. But had some wack positive camber, so i ended up using GH sigma arms, the taper is a bit different on the ball joint, but it works. But in a perfect world you would want to either machine down the ball joint, or drill out the hole in the steering knuckle.

yeah that works, but the ae86 and XT130 struts dont have the cast calliper mount, which is what im after, suitable struts with the cast caliper mount and 100mm bolt spacing on the caliper mount are - Mx73 and ST 141
ive just been to bunnings to get me an inclometer ($15) and down to pick n pay less to do some more measuring.
The pick of the bunch is the ST141 strut.
KPI is 8.0'
calliper mount spacing - 100mm
lower strut mount spacing - 90mm
insert - 48mm
PCD - 4 x 114.3
MX73
KPI - 9.3'
caliper mount spacing - 100mm
lower strut mount spacing - 90mm
insert - 48mm
PCD - 4 x 114.3
Ae86
KPI - 7.9'
caliper mount - No good (for what im after)
Lower strut mount spacing - 85mm
insert - 41mm???
PCD - 4 x 114.3
Now using St141 or MX73 struts, Techno toy steering knuckles (custom) 90mm mount spacing - i can now bolt R32/33 calipers straight up to the ST141 strut and use ae86 LCA's.

Ae86 strut is 51mm OD not 51mm ID. Same as celica *a2*, *a4* *a6*.
sorry was refering to the ID of the strut tube itself which is the same as the insert OD. top post Edited

dno man, im cutting the sucker off anyway, i can measure if when i get some struts if no one can answer it for you before hand.

no alot larger.
around 180mm
you cant run them in the ae chassis becausee they foul on the inside of the strut tower.
just coilover them and your sweet!

Yeah, i know, but the ID is not 51mm. The OD of the actual tube is 51mm. An insert that has a diameter of 51mm won't fit inside.

they use the same insert at ae86. all good
