About the only cool thing about USDM cars is the brake booster location

someone explain what this is/does

hao.

It's just a breather hose thing. Basically excess oil from the head goes through that hose and into the intake manifold to be burnt off.

Close.

It's a Positive Crankcase Ventilation hose (PCV). It vents gasses introduced into the crankcase via slip past the piston rings + a few other places. These gasses often pick up a bit of oil on the way out. The pipe plumbs back into the intake tract so the gas / oil mix is burnt, not put straight into the atmosphere.

You correctly described the basic operation, sort of.

thanks so i can connect that to a catch can and the other hose goes to no where?
is that illegal?

whats the best practice to have your oil cooler setup so you can't get bent over by the po po

Oil coolers are legal, just have them mounted sensibly (i.e. not infront of your bumper)

Legal catch-cans are a bit tricky. Some say it simply can't vent to the atmosphere, others that everything in your PCV system has to be plumbed back, otherwise it's instadefect. The most legal thing i can think of is to use your catchcan as an oil-air separator (i.e., have your pcv hose from rocker cover 'in', oil picked up collects in catch can, and have your vac hose from your intake manifold 'out' at a higher point to keep pressure even?)

Others might have to help you here.

technically its illegal if you arent buring the pcv gas. but you should be allowed a baffle system plumbed in (a catch can). of course if the baffle gets a leak and the hose from the baffle to the inlet gets blocked you could be excused for not noticing ;) )

as for the cooler. i think all they could really pick you up on is cutting metal to run the lines. and boso-style mounting of the core might not go down well either.

edit: what Javal said :)

Why have one then?

i think the theory is your suppose to "Catch the oil" rather than let it be burnt by the engine.

i think some of the "really good" setups put the oil back into the sump. but alot of these cheaper ones you buy just fill up, and you have to empty them at some stage. this setup should still be legal as you arent venting any dodgy air to the atmosphere, and at the same time you arent sending any oil into the intake.

Most of the time if you have a look at the shit that builds up in your catch can you wouldn't want that going back into your sump or intake. It's a mix of oil and water/moisture, ends up looking like a milkshake.

I think the ones you're referring to ke70dave are the proper oil/water seperator.

Marvis: That's the whole point in running a catch can, vapour can still pass through but larger parts of oil can be caught and not sent into the intake.

That's how mine's hooked up, goes from rocker cover to catch can then catch can to inlet.

P.s: And I dunno about anyone else, but when my 4a gets to about 7,600 I know it's throwing alot of oil around and I'd rather it be caught than burnt up.
