First up, welcome to the forum

Secondly, when posting in the tech questions section, there is a template that must be used, which is stickied at the top of the topics list.

Now, to your question -

I would upgrade to a T-50 personally. The gap between 4th and 5th is only about a 500rpm drop, however it is a very nice thing to have.

Keep in mind you'll want to find a T-50 in good condition, you don't want to have to shell out for one and then rebuild it! Although it wouldn't be a bad idea.

yer i wanna rebuild whatever box i get, so yer ill only change to a t50 if the t40s are shit n cant handle much abuse but if they can take a fair bit of abuse then ill stick with the t40 im not fussed about ratios n that im just after strength

You won't get any strength improvements moving to a T-50, they are essentially the same gearbox, with the same gearset, same synchros, same bearings. Just one has an overdrive.

It all really depends on your application. What motor do you have?

A T-50 will be fine man.

Unless you're going supercharged or turbo, you won't be able to lunch a T50 without really really trying.

It may get crunchy with thrashing, but mechanical sympathy saves gearboxes.

I have heard bad things about the TRD short shifter, I dont know if its true or not

The standard shifter probably works the best. I have a TRD short shifter, which is more dirrect and metalic feeling.

strangely enough I prefer the stock shifter chopped down and welded on an angle. It allows me to move in a very comfortable position while driving.

Also have to bring up doubts about rebuilding any T gearbox as there is some debate whether if parts are still available for the job

more fact less rumours required in this thread.

Get a t50. Keep the stock shifter. Rebuild the t50. Parts are still available, you just have to look.

Rebuild the stock shifter while you're at it. Feels a million times better.

so do i have to source all the parts myself n then take it into a place that can rebuild it or will the rebuilder be able to source the parts and rebuild it

yeah no problem at all Dave, the only thing I would want if I did a gearbox is second and third gear synchro's and maybe a seal or two.
