Figured we have an S and T thread, the next most common is F series diff. A favourite for when people go turbo, want a bulletproof setup and are sick of smashing T series axles.

First of all some basic info about the F series Diff.

Crown Wheel: 7.5"

Braking: Drum and Disc variations

RA65 Celica = Drum
RT142 Corona IRS = Solid Disc
MA61 Supra = Vented disc
MX73 Cressida = Vented Disc
YR22 Tarago = Drum
MS112 Crown = Drum
Corona Mk2 = Drum

RT142 live axle borgwarner discs can be adopted (semi) easily onto some F and T diffs, more info here:

http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32132

F series ratio info here on Toymods too.

http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&th=33561

To see which ratio your F diff is check out this:

Read the Axle Code from the vehicle indentification plate.

first digit: ring gear diameter

A 138mm

Example: F372 = 7.5" 3.58 final ratio 2 pinion diff. Will not be stamped on the diff, you will have to check the build plate on the firewall of the car you pull it from.

LSD Availability: Altezza LSD's form the likes of Kaaz etc will bolt in but a spacer ring needs to be made up for it to work. Can anyone shed more light on this? Steroidchickens?

Tomei Altezza centre into an MS112 Crown = Works, no problem!
Cusco Altezza centre into YR22 Tarago = Success!

IRS centres will bolt straight into Live axle F diffs so you could use an MA61 LSD but apparently no good for proper driving with small clutch plates and small surface area they aren't very effective and usually well worn out. An aftermarket 1.5 or 2 way or locker is your best bet for grip or drift work. See Kaaz, Tomei, OS Giken, Cusco, (TRD no longer available)

Side note for celica/cressida/irs corona - Altezza/RS2000 Cusco LSD was a nightmare for my diff guy into RT142/RA65 IRS centre probably due to the car not being LSD to begin with. Machining and lots of hunting for correct bearings needed. Have been told (but can't confirm) that the MA61 diff centre half shafts are needed as they were lsd from factory and are shorter to suit.

Torsen and Truetracs LSD's are also available. Many hilux 4wd live axle ran 7.5" FRONT diffs too 80 and 90's, possibly 2000's. Lots of options from 4 wheel drive aftermarket companies.

Cars:

MX13 Cessida - 3.9 - 1410mm (Same width as T series/S series/KE70 BW)

Tarago YR22 - 4.1 manual and 4.3 auto - 1435mm
Uses a G series (Hilux) diff nose flange bolt pattern (60x60mm) All other F series is 55x55mm)

Crowns:

MS110 Solid Axle (coils) F362: 7.5", 4.77:1, 2 pinions, Open
5x114.3 1450mm Solid disc

MS112 Solid Axle (coils) F292: 7.5", 4.10:1, 2 pinions, Open
5x114.3 1450mm Solid disc

MS123 Semi trailing arm IRS F285: 7.5", 4.30:1, 4 pinions,
Clutch LSD 5x114.3 N/A Ventilated disc, 1 piston calipers

MS50 Solid Axle (leaf) F292: 7.5", 4.10:1, 2 pinions, Open
5x114.3 unknown Drum

If you have an IRS setup, you will need a center that has circlip grooves.

IRS has shim adjustment = pay diff shop to set it up

80 series landcruisers and hiluxs of that era have F series FRONT DIFFS, usually with ratios like 4.1/4.3

Kona I will be fitting an Altezza torsen in the coming weeks, and will let you know how I go and any difficulties.
another question, I assume that the diff backlash is adjusted to the same specs as a T-series?
I have ST141 rona rear brakes to put onto it. Will post up any difficulties I have with that.

mark 2 F series has no oil baffles. i learnt this the hard way at eastern creek when i killed a centre.

tarago F series come standard with baffles.

will be installing altezza TRD 2 way next month will put up info then.
first trd 2 way i had ant put together.

really need baffles.

i made some up. was easy as.
even with baffles i extended the breather an inch and still overfilled diff oil.
after that it was fine.

I've dropped both an MA61 LSD centre and a Tomei Altezza centre into an MS112 Crown housing and pumpkin. Both went in and worked without issue.

MS112 Crown diffs are cool. And MA61 rear calipers and discs (redrilled to 5stud) bolt up for ventilated rear discs.

got pics of baffle design?

Golberg
22nd December 2009, 09:25 PM
Hrm, I've seen them somewhere, not sure where though.

Its basically a thin bit of metal which curves around the centre inline with the circle which surrounds the diff head. Then it has a hole through each side for the axle (its two seperate baffles one on each side).

Not sure if my word explanation helps there.

OMG866
23rd December 2009, 06:10 PM
goin to open my yr22 f series diff on the weekend. so ill take some pictures of the baffles and post them up.

Dazzla86
24th December 2009, 12:03 AM
yep the f series have baffle plates before the diff tubes. just pressed steel sheet metal in the shape of the inner diff housing as goldberg said. S & Tseries also have this. also acts as a bit of a guide when inserting your axles to a minor extent. Will accept a Ma61 lsd centre no problem and also after market truetrac centres with no issues at all, this is for the YR22 centre. Fat axles, 7.5 inch crownwheel which is gimungus for a 4 cylinder. Enjoys boost, chomps on fried fish

also wheel fitment will need to be reconsidered as it will be 20mm extra per side, which is no major problem as you can easily get 20mm out of your rear guards with flaring with a hammer.

More info added.

Tarago YR22 - 4.1 and 4.3 - 1435mm

Uses a G series (Hilux) diff nose tailshaft bolt pattern (60x60mm) All other F series is 55x55mm)

Going to see if a Hilux G series rear half bolts up to the front half and is the same length as the RT142 Tailshaft ive got here.

Kona, some YR22's have the 54.8 drive flange, its luck of the draw. They're interchangeable anyway.

Really? Word.

Will have to measure mine to check, maybe it was different from the auto to manual diffs? Mine was an auto.

Can the gurus tell me what is involved in replacing an S series diff with an F series (F372)?

Would major mods be on the cards i.e. replace whole axle or just the diff centre (if this is possible).

Thanks

for you dude bein in wa, take your f series an s series to driveline engineering, they have a jig premade for this conversion an they swap the mounts over so its a straight bolt in, then just get the handbrake cables modified and tailshaft modified. $1000 change over max

For the people that are running the F series diffs behind NA's do you find it affects balance too much? Is the weight noticeable when accelerating/braking/turning? Have a locked F series not sure if I should chuck it in or not.

Keep it, you will NEVER have to worry about it braking and you can get ratios anywhere from 3's-5's.

Anthony
11th February 2010, 03:56 PM
That's hard to answer, personally if i had a car that was 100% going to stay NA 4AGE I would consider building up a T kouki t series in a good ratio. Otherwise stick with what's in there.

25th April 2011, 06:17 PM
I also have possibly a silly question. My rt142 doesn't have anything stamped on the diff/axle spot on my I.D plate but I'm pretty sure the IRS models have an F372 (correct me if I'm wrong) are these able to be shimed or is welding my only option to lock it cheaply. She's a budget box so I don't wanna buy a locker or anything but I'm wondering what's possible to do with them before I pull it apart this Wednesday!

pinion front :- 30306 = $23.60 x 1 TIMKEN?
pinion rear :- 32307 = $28.40 x 1 TIMKEN?
centre bearing outer :- 17831 = $19.25 x 2 = $38.50 NSK?
centre bearing inner :- 17887 = $50.2o x 2 = $100.40 NSK?
Total = $264.01 +GST = $290.41 full set..

assassin10000
10th July 2011, 05:14 PM
I've got 2 or 3 sets of F-series specs. I would use these, 'newest' ones I listed off the Tacoma/Hilux.

Ring Gear Backlash = 0.005-0.007" (.13-.18mm)
Ring Gear Bolt Torque = 71 ft lbs
Pinion Nut Torque = 80 ft lbs (to MAX of 174 ft lbs for crush sleeve)
Pinion Bearing Preload = NEW 12.2-18.3 in lbs (14-21 kg cm) / USED 5.2-8.7 in lb (6-10 kg cm)
Carrier Bearing Cap Bolt Torque = 63 ft lbs
Total Preload = 3.5-5.2 in lbs (4-6 kg cm) - on top of/in addition to pinion preload

From here: http://forums.club4ag.com/zerothread?id=28876

Also, if you have not EVER rebuilt/built a differential. Get someone that has done them successfully to help/do it for you... or worst case pay someone. It's not just a spec deal, it takes a bit of hands on experience before you will understand how to do it right.

was putting together my diff today. ran into a lil bit of trouble. all my bearing were correct except the ones that go onto the new trd 2way 41301-RA010 centre. I got all the bearings and seals for $253 from a bearing place. The centre bearings were correct for the old centre.

does anyone know the correct bearing part number?

Ill be going to the bearing on monday to see place to see about an exchange for something that fits.

also getting a new collapsible spacer and new pinion nut.

Edit: the inside diameter of the old bearing is 45mm the trd centre is 50mm

32010X is the bearing you need for the centre thanks assassin (Andrew)

Unfortunately the listing doesn't say if it's a standard rotation (what you need for RWD applications), or reverse (Split case/clamshell) IRS.

I'm currently running a 4.88 from here, in my f-series:

Isn't the collapsible spacer for bearing preload? Wouldn't make sense to put a solid one in?

FoldKing86
28th August 2011, 09:43 PM
Not 100% sure why sorry, just heard it somewhere along the grapevine.

I know mines solid and never had drama's. collapsible spacer does just that, changes shape then creates movement in other parts i think.

Sorry just a random post i did, i really dont know much about it.

f-series being a bigger stronger diff it might not matter as much and the spacer would be stronger in the first place.

Nice work on the hand break cable solution! That's the sole reason I switched to S13 calipers on my F-series. Which reminds me, I gotta get them dimensions for you. I still haven't switched to the other hard drive to do the cad stuff.

Hen may possibly be a nut
30th August 2011, 02:47 AM
When building a diff you can use a custom solid spacer for the pinion rather than the standard crush-tube.

Crash tubes do exactly that, get crushed when you torque the pinion bolt up and therefore should give the correct pinion preload. The danger is that if abused the crush tube could crush further and then things get sloppy. A solid spacer has to be custom made and adjusted in length to give the right pinion preload, but is supposed to be stronger.

I had a solid spacer put in my F series when I had it built. Given the price of having a centre built and adjusted it wasn't much extra from memory.

An f series is a toyota diff, not a borg warner.

it has a 7.5 inch crown wheel. Is found in a tarago or old corona most commonly.

So what does it take to convert the yr20 tarago f series to disk?

I read the link in the first page and it only shows for all other f series, doesn't say anything about the yr20.
Is the yr20's f series similar to one of the ones mentioned?

All help much appreciated.

Golberg
29th May 2012, 10:31 AM
I'm guessing you mean YR22? because a YR20 has an E series.

I'm pretty sure the axle flange is too large to fit the ST141/RT142 rear discs

You'd possibly find that the MA70 disc brakes fit though, they fit on hilux's diffs and may have the same axle flange.

Other than that, you can make anything fit if you get a custom caliper bracket made up.

Hen may possibly be a nut
30th May 2012, 12:48 AM
Yep, I can confirm that the classic Corona disc rear end DOES NOT fit YR22 (2.2 litre EFI) Tarago F series.

The YR21 and YR20 should have an E series. I've never checked it, but I'd look at either Corona setup or Golberg's link for discs on these. However you can't get an E-series LSD, so you're going to have to weld it or live with it open.

Just reporting to the thread what I learned today.

I had the altezza torsen lsd centre fitted to the f series corona mk 2 housing.

It was the type 2 lsd with the shafts parallel to the pinion, supposedly a strong design.

Also, the diff shop did not use a spacer under the crown wheel as some have suggested. They were able to use a slightly different bearing and offset the centre on the adjusting threads. This way you avoid needing longer bolts, a spacer, and you avoid adding weight and a sheer point to the rotating assembly. Only took 1 day turnaround. I took it from fabricators to the diff shop midday yesterday, and got it back trued, cleaned, and assembled with new bearings and seals lunchtime today.

Also it didn't have any baffles inside. I intend to fit some. Pretty much any f series bafffle should fit I hope. The cross over amongst every other F series model.

Any one know how much power a yr22 f series can handle?

Looking at getting a 4:11's one and I will be having around 300kws atws

LittleRedSpirit
4th January 2013, 10:49 AM
300 kw is a lot of power. Might be somewhere around the limit.

I know the general rule of thumb would be T series maybe 200hp and not too much torque. I'm not sure for F series, but then again the 8 inch Toyota Diffs are almost unsmashable, so how bad could a 7.5" be?

Has anyone on this site Broken a F and how did you do it?

I thought he had a G series? I asked someone at work who does a lot of work with race cars and modding diffs and he thinks that the housing would have to be really badly warped to break axles.

They wouldn't be for a rear diff. Hilux's always run G-series (8.0") diffs in the rear.

IFS Hiluxs run F-series (7.5") diffs in the front.

So more than likely that'll fit any other F-series.

As a side note i bought a 4.556:1 Yukon gear set from complete offroad for just over $300 (Linky here) (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yukon-Toyota-7-5-Ring-Pinion-Gear-Set-4-56-/140484750143?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item20b58b2b3f) and the quality looks every bit as good as the oem ones i pulled out.

I'm looking for a 1.5-way diff for in my F-series axle from a Toyota crown MS112 ('79-'83) and I just want to double check some of the info I found so far.

Can anyone confirm or correct the following;
I have to look for a diff that will fit an altessa RS200 (SXE10) as that will fit into my diff as well.
Best brands will be TRD or Tomei.

Any other brands or model types that will fit a F-series diff? Also is it correct the Tomei diff will need a spacer ring machined up?

Cheers!

You dont know if you need a spacer ring until it comes apart and you see the dimensions of the gears and bearings.

Yes altezza lsds will fit, you can even use the stock torsen lsds from the altezzas.

Correct. You will most probably not need it as there is adjustment you can play with to move the centre left/right. You will only need the spacer if you cannot set the backlash correctly because you run out of adjustment.

LittleRedSpirit
12th May 2013, 08:20 PM
Yes and dont worry about making it up beforehand, if its required, any diff shop worth using can whip something up that will work great. I also built an altezza type 2 torsen lsd in an mx13 housing and it didn't require a spacer either. I used the 40 year old mx13 3.9 gears as they were extremely low mileage and parts of this era are generally great.

Just in case anyone is ever trying to identify an F series TRD centre, here's some handy pictures. The part number is: 41301-RA010

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/6/8/5/525768.jpg

There's also some confusion about the TRD centres being swappable from 1.5-way to 2-way, but the F series diffs at least are limited to 2-way only. There's a note on the TRD parts page about all of the FR diffs being 2-way only as well.

Alright guys ive bought an SXE10 Altezza Cusco RS 2 way for my YR22 Tarago live axle diff. Got 3.73 ratio centre from an F Series IRS corona that im using the CW + P of. LittleRedSpirit
7th May 2014, 09:51 AM
Should work. Some people talk about shimming the gears to make it all line up, but the diff shop I used was pretty tricky and were able to use slightly odd width bearings to correct it slightly. I used MX13 3.89 gears from the original diff, as they were mint, and I rate old Toyota parts. Especially when were talking about 7.5 inch diff gears from a car that made barely over 120hp. Perhaps these had more meat on them and didnt require as much adjustment anyhow, I dont know. I used the lexus type 2 torsen from the 6 bolt rs200 rear end.

Konakid
7th May 2014, 12:28 PM
Great news, thanks. Ill give them the heads up when i take it in there and let them know that a small shim may be required and tell them about the bearing change to correct the adjustment also.

What is the Type 2 Torsen like MAtt? have you done much agggressive driving grip or drift with it? Thinking about one for my daily RT142 IRS F rear end.

Having a chat with a mate today we were throwing ideas around to match the RA65 vented front setup on my corona with a disc rear (currently YR22 Tarago drums). Now i kow these F diffs have a different flange pattern to all the other f diffs but has anyone tried to bolt on RT142 IRS F series disc gear? Presuming the ol 8mm spacer ring woul be needed to be welded to the axle flange to space it out like usual disc conversions.

I have both IRS corona daily and the YR22 diff in my wagon so ill investigate this this weekend and post my findings. Could be a bolt on'ish disc upgrade that the YR22 has been lacking!

YRO 11A
2nd July 2014, 11:39 PM
my disc conversion uses a yr22 housing with mx73 discs. mx73,ma61 and rt142irs all share the same design rear brakes. if you are not planing on running a hand brake it would be much easier, but my setup retains the handbrake.
firstly you bore the center of the backing plates out so it is big enough to have the yr22 axle bearing fit through. the backing plate is only as thick as the drum backing plate so there is no issue there.
then you re-drill the backing plate to match the diff flange, you do need a spacer on the axle between the flange and the bearing, i don't have the width but you could work it out fairly easily by measuring the distance of flange face to inner face of backing plate on both setups and spacing the yr22 to match the rt142
then it is as simple as making a caliper bracket which bolts to the backing plate and welding it to the flange, there are some photos here https://imageshack.com/a/BDMF/1

LittleRedSpirit
3rd July 2014, 09:27 AM
One must wonder, if you have to do all that, you might as well start with some decent calipers to begin with, and make brackets for those instead. It would be just the same amount of work to get wilwoods on there as it would to put single piston semi floating non vented 1970s toyota brakes on there.

YRO 11A
3rd July 2014, 10:11 AM
A wilwood wouldn't have been a bad idea, but its the rear brakes on a 900kg car so it would be a bit overkill, a complete brake package from an ma61 was a much cheaper option and is more than suffice to pull this little rig up
And the rotors I used are 269x18 vented, only the corona rotors are solid at 269x10 and then the ma61 is a bees dick smaller at 266x18 but is also vented

LittleRedSpirit
3rd July 2014, 06:55 PM
If it were me Id buy a wilwood caliper with the mechanical handbrake and use the MA61 rotor. I like the idea of vented rotors over solid at a bare minimum. I dont mean to knock you, just throwing out ideas, and wilwood calipers are so cheap to buy new.

Konakid
3rd July 2014, 08:48 PM
I want to avoid cutting drilling welding where possible, it will blow out the cost as i can't weld.

At this stage im comming to the realisation that i will prob have to upgrade the fronts too, custom bracket and rx7 4 pots maybe. MA61 rear would be a good match for these i would have thouth

YRO 11A
3rd July 2014, 09:13 PM
Fair enough man, I did consider a bolt on caliper bracket though it would have needed to be about 40mm thick in places and I thought that the machining costs would have been somewhat ridiculous. Im sure there are other ways to get aeound this. I however just used what I had lying around so the setup didn't cost me too much , maybe like $200 total for brackets and bearing spacers, the rest was just measuring shit and time. I have some ma61 rear arms complete here and some spare yr22 axles, I could setup some axles and get brackets cut for you but your abit far to just bring my mig over and set your rear end up. You could theoretically just run the rotors and calipers without the backing plate or spacer ring , would still need to weld a bracket to the housing though

Big T
3rd July 2014, 09:18 PM
Is the bolt spacing on the axle flange of the yr22 the same as a g-series? It would open up a far wider range of brake upgrades.

YRO 11A
3rd July 2014, 09:27 PM
Not even close, the tcr10/20 tarago f series runs the same rotors as the ma70 which you use on lux diffs, unfortunately it seems the yr22 has a flange all of its own, not a huge issue though as the mx73, ma61 and irs rt142 stuff can be made to work with only slightly more work than the ma70 to hilux diff conversion

Just chiming in to ask a question.

Has anyone researched and found a handbrake cable that works for MX13 diff into ae86 with retaining the mx13 drums? Im assuming ke70 might be the go due to knowing they will bolt into the chassis and suiting the drum rear brake, but Im unsure how different the borg drums are the way the cable attaches.

Possibly ae86 drum cables? Or something else? Can anyone report what they used. Im trying to avoid spending $300 on custom ones.

Maybe earlier corolla type? Or something else entirely?

You can use the drums/backing plates off your s-series or drum t. The bolt flange pattern is identical. You'd use your existing cables then. The spacing from axle flange to drum should be identical or very very close. St141/rt142 disk brake set ups also work with custom cables.

Lot of good info in this thread. One thing I don't think has been covered, I have an F series diff from a Tarago w/ MA61 LSD. The factory KE70 handbrake cables have a circle 'grommet' which sat in the back of the drum brakes. The F series has a rectangle hole, so the circle one won't fit inside.
Has anybody come up with a simple solution for this? Or should I just go grab a pair of Tarago hand brake cables, pull the KE70 ones and get a marine shop to build a new set?

Konakid
20th August 2014, 06:30 PM
The tarago cables are the wrong length. Well at least one is. One cable goes directly back to the drum from the handbrake while the other snakes around the gearbox and is longer by a foot or two.

I you got both sets and told them to attach the F ends to the KE70 cables and use new cables you would be on a winner.

I just worked out that F series mx13 diff and brakes into ae86 handbrake cables are ae86 S series. They fit perfect.

Also, from my current experience, there are numerous other things you can do to reco the mx13 drum system with other parts. Japlish told me that ra65 drums could be made to fit, and with a small step machined in them they fit perfectly to the older style backing plate.

Japlish also told me to use ae86 wheel cylinders to correct the hydraulic system, and that seems to be perfect too.

I bought shoes for an mx13 so thats original fit.

The rest are just the stock mechanical parts. Just clean and refit, and remember to grease where necessary.

All confirmed as accurate on my car, so peace.

ma45 f series disc's are available in aus, they are exactly the same as s13 rotors that people use but 1mm thicker and already have the correct centre hole, unlike the s13 rotors......

So....has anybody come up with a disk conversion for the f series? That's a reasonable size for anybody running 15's, that doesn't involve finding some hens tooth Toyota to raid parts from. I have the FD front calipers & disks up front, but don't see the point in running larger disks at the rear like some kits available at the moment.

Edit: This is available from the US - https://technotoytuning.com/toyota/ae86/new-solid-rear-big-brake-kit-ae86-corolla

And will work with a 7.5 inch rear end (F Series) but is probably oversized for what I need.

Or will an adjustable brake bias be able to sort it out?

Edit2: and pucker the anus because it's a good $1100 AUD by the time it lands here....maybe just do a couple of laps at Wakefield and bring it in? lol.

Yep i have. I used the T3 Kit minus but l got the calipers else where. The backing plates are 2 large and dont line up but Chris at Castle Hill Performance filled holes and redrilled to suit just picked them up them up today.

Its all at Craft getting put together and picking it up on monday / tuesday.

p.s didnt cost me that much all up under 800 but with integrated handbrake give alot more clearance etc
