Hey, i hope this is the right section, i apologise in advance if it isnt.

Car - AE86 Levin 3door

motor - Blacktop 20v

use - Daily

problem - So I basically am thinking about buying this AE86 from melbourne, im in Adelaide. It has had a 20v Conversion Done but doesnt have any modplate or engineers certificate. apparently the converison was done by a good mechanic. Basically im asking what do i have to do/how much is it gonna cost me to get this car registered in SA, cheers

probably more then the cars worth. any engineers cert over there doesn't mean shit here, as SA has tuffer rules. our certs are actual time consuming paper work and not just a tick sheet and plate job.

not the question your asking but I may be able to pick how good parts of the conversion has been done if you have pics.

Be very wary of it being done by a mechanic

looks like a pretty average conversion done. thats the second 86 i seen with an eg civic radiator in it. also why does it only have 3 trumpets??

because with trumpets that long and with the wrong ITB adapter the 4th trumpet always fowls the brake booster.. its got a stockie on # 4.... that conversion looks crap.. its got a free water heater with those pipes hanging over the extractors.
Eg Civic radiator... they work with the B16a's so it should keep things cool

but its just very untidy.

look at the filters for the velocity stacks.. cheap and dodgee
water lines.. not the best choice
.. brake lines are all bent along the firewall...
Aircon lines have no gromets throug the firewall

it all screams lazy and cheap and slaped together...... next!

yea i think ill pass on this one after some consideration, thanks for your input. im now having a peek at this one

its in my state which saves alot of trouble, just not sure on what a full rebuild would cost at a proper performance build/tuning place. I tried rebuilding a 4age beforeand failed, need something uber reliable so a fully rebuilt engine under warranty sounds nice.

I agree with Sundee, what a crap conversion

no pic of the engine bay on that one you linked to

looks nice that trueno... i guess things to look for with them is... is it a genuine trueno or has it had a conversion.. i dno if its me.. but ive seen 2 in real life and asked the owner if they have been levins converted and i was right.. they just dont look right.

I think their is no pic of the engine sam because its toast.

needs rebuild or doner engine.

specs are vague..
but from pics it looks neat

personally i wouldnt buy a car just off the internet.. when i got mine.. i got as many pics as i could from the owner.. asked the best part of a million questions.. once i was about 90% convinced on buying it, booked a one way ticket on virgin and flew to adelaide to inspect it in person , take it for a test drive, then once i was happy i drove it back to sydney. good thing about adelaide is that you can get a form from roads SA or whateva they call themselves, and it allows u to drive an unregistered car to where ever u need to take it... interstate they give u 2 weeks!! awsome

yea but i live in adelaide, which would save a whole lot of hassle, the guy says it is sold pending payment but he reckons the other guy wont end up being able to buy it. i think ill see if i can get a look at it tommorow.
if the info so far is right and the 4age is the origional motor i think ill go for it, most it can cost me is 5-6 grand to get the engine fully rebuilt, no rego or roadworthy problems will be there, in SA we just transfer papers and thats it. its when a car comes in from interstate it gets messy.|

i have an approved 10 grand loan waiting to be signed over and these guys

look like they do some real quality work and have a shit ton of expertise.

feel free to give any commment
they are HIGHLY valued,
Cheers

dno... looks are final product are 2 different things.. talk to your local adelaide boys and see who they recommend as engine builders

Hmm went to see the car and the car look 60% better in the picture haha, needs more work that just the engine for sure. and im not desperately after a trueno in specific so im giving this one a miss as well :( back to the drawing board, thanks for your input guys.

i dono, but for 5g, a trueno that clean (from what i see) even with a blown 16v is a very good buy

edit: if i didnt have an 86 already, i would be bustin that guys balls to sell it to me

he said it looked 60% better in the photos, so it looked 60% worse in real life...if it were clean and the engine was gone and u got it for 5k... hes asking that so u could easily get it for $4500... then 4 - 5 k for an engine rebuild and it would be worth it i think... if its a genuine trueno

to be honest, even if it wasnt a genuine trueno, if it was in the nic that it looks in the pics, i'd still grab it
also, i would just drop another 16v into it, wouldnt bother with rebuilding unless i was going for a decent turbo motor.

if he did that he would have a trueno for under $6500! score

That Trueno was for sale for more than twice that 8 months ago (http://www.nissansilvia.com/classifieds/viewlisting.php?view=2080) when it was running, so 5K is mad cheap! (I'd check exactly what's there or missing) Also as it's SA reg, would save yourself a lot of hassles getting one from interstate and you can go see it yourself before hand. Finally even with no motor, you can fit what ever engine you want and not have to worry about inheriting someones workmanship or headaches. win!
