Car - ADM AE86 Sprinter

motor - Not important

use - Family obviously

problem - Cant find the tie down point

I'm sure this is going to get some laughs, I am amused myself. Anyways here it goes: I was hoing to fit a baby seat into my newly aquired sprinter. Has anybody done this, or know where the anchor point is? Or maybe there simply isn't one. Any help appreciated....

The normal rear seat belts in Australian cars are a 3 point lap-slash style. The retractor is way up the back behind the plastic pannels. If you open the plastic doors up the back, where the tool kit and jack is, you will see the belt retractors. If you use the same bolt as an achour point you can't go too wrong for strength. I think my car had a child restraint belt at the same bolt.

The Australian standard for a child restraint captive nut, is 5/16". (Very close to 8mm). AE92 Secas (and I assume every other car after it) have a 5/16" (not 8mm) captive nut somewhere near where the number plate bolts to. I don't think the AE86 has the same nut.

So basicaly, any bolt hole 8mm or bigger should do the trick if its roughly in the right place.

Thanks Johnny, will check it out. The plastics in the boot of my sprinter have been stripped out, I know where you mean. I'll see if it will work. The Baby seat I have in my other car has the tie down point virtually right behind (in plane) with the seats position, but I couldn't find a similar point in the AE86. I thought anchoring to the side (not in plane) might be considered a no no?....

In Tasmania, RACT are the experts at baby seats. They will often give free advice and even fit your seat correctly for free. If you need to buy something they have all the nuts and bolts to Australian standards, or new seats etc. They also have kits to install and achour point, which may involve drilling and pop riviting.

Try your RACV, RACQ or NRMA equivalent.

Also Jap importers have to fit child restraints all the time. Every Silvia and whatnot has to have the bolts fitted for compliance. Ask them for a kit. "ADR Modifications" is a shonky business that does have this kit. You may have to drill the floor.

Great idea, didn't think of that. Might try them out see what they have to say. Not worried if holes need to be drilled.

aus delivered ae86s have 2 anchor points for child restraints in the middle of the boot floor. theres usually a sticker covering the threads. Imported AE86's that are 4 seat complied should have them added to the parcel shelf for coupes or the rear floor for hatches, if the compliance was done properly. I would check these before anchoring a child I cared about there though. The ADM factory ones are bomb proof.
