Car -ae86
motor -beams
use - hardpark
problem - have got my beams running in my 86 smile.gif
however, there seems to be an awful rythmic squeel. It was there as soon as i started the engine, goes away under throttle, comes back on decel, and is REALLY loud.
I only have an alt attched, and it still makes the noise with that belt removed. That leaves the timing belt, but its toothed?
could it be one of the tensioner bearings?
trying to upload a movie or sound but i suck at the interwebs,
playing some more.. it seems like the noise is coming from the inlet somehow... fucking killing me.
anyone have ANY ideas?
occurs/started when - when running
personal situation - murdering mickey mouse

I havn't worked on a BEAMS, but I would take the timing belt covers off and have a good look. Check belt tension (replace tensioner if belt looks loose or vibrates too much.) Look at belt idler bearings.

thats what i was thinking but it really seams like the noise is coming from the inlet.... like som freaky reverberation coming back up the inlet ......

BEAMS have 2 cats from factory
You removed them but added 1
Therefore your car is a pussy magnet
I dunno, tho, pull timing covers off, get a screwdriver and do the sethoscope test.

What sort of throttles do you have? What sort of setup do you have to get the idle adjustment? Some setups have a fair bit of whistling from the throttles at idle.

lol..... biggo my lad im dissapointed :) there isnt an exhaust yet :) let alone cats.
as for the sound its making, im agine a cat with its tail caught in the timing belt :(
throttles are blacktop throttles, with cast adaptor.i have tapped the 4 throttles, one for map, one for brake booster, one for fpr and one blanked.
to be honest the only adjustment i have for idle is throttle cable and or anything else on the throttles....

Either loose timing belt, or failed bearings in the belt idlers.
Unless you think the noise is sucking air near the throttles.

get some wd 40 or rp7 and spray it on any bearing rollers like a tensioner or idler and if it goes silent then you know that the prob and should replace,
it sounds to me though like you have some kind of leaking air somewhere, or just the way the butterflies are sitting.

i had something that was similar to yours but on my 4age sounded like a loose belt. after looking at all the possiblities, it worked out to be just the hose that came out cam cover into the inlet manifold.
what i did was installed cheap catch can and the noise went away . i have no idea why it would make that kind of noise but maybe the blow by pulses, and with it escaping out from a small air leak make the awful rythmic squeel.
hope this helps/

yeah i have open pcv for the moment, but even with those covered the noise was still there. should have a can arriving soon, so will check that out also. thanks :)

Probably already done it, but have you checked for intake leaks?
I had the exact same problem when I converted my 16V to quads, pulled all the belts off, replaced the tensioner and the annoying squeal was still there!
Splashed some water around the intake runners and found a leak!

havnt done it and thats a definite possiblitty...
how does the water thing work ?? :peek:

just spray water around all the joins, and if it draws water through it will alter the idle.
I vote airleak, as its not there on wide open throttle.

i think its pretty straight forward,
put a bit of water were you suspect the leak and if there is a air leak the escaping air will blow away the water.

its drawing air not blowing air dude. He has no boost

it will blow air man
sundee
11th January 2010, 03:07 PM
although the engine is crating vacume - wont a pressurised air flow from a place of high pressure to a place of low pressure? - so it should blow out the leeking area?
Gunner
11th January 2010, 04:32 PM
so, if I remove a vacuum line, it will blow out?

can a friendly mod change the topic to how to rebuild the top end of a beams please?
cylinder three looks like it has an exhaust valve head floating around in it and a bent inlet valve also.
so im going to be finding out how to rebuild the top end on these cunts MUCH sooner than i had planned.
officially car will NEVER drive accrding to the stars :(
biggo
11th January 2010, 08:02 PM
who diagnosed it?
how did you bend just one exhaust valve?
Are the beams really interferance engines?
But yair, pull the head off, toyotas are a peice of piss anyway.

me.... looking down the sparkplug hole there is a round thing lying ontop of the piston :S
and looking down the throat of the inlet the left inlet valve looks bent.. LOOKS it might not be...
i believe that beams are interference, but im more thinking something got in there and took the head of the valve.

Agh bollocks, man thats just terrible, can you get the bit out with a telescopic magnet? to see what exactly it is, but if the valve is bent :crying:

ghey,
sorry to hear man

its way bigger than the sparkplug whole., but a valve head is the only large round object i can think of being in there.
oh well, ill get to learn how to rebuild a head JUST a bit quicker than i thought yeah :)

If you have access to a boroscope, get in there and have a look.
Otherwise:
Remove head, check this shit out, do your timing belt, idlers and tensioners while it's off, keep it gang affiliated.

oh no
i feel nervous about my upcoming beams convertion now :S
did you get the motor off ant? is there some kind of warranty?
its not cool that it knocks on first start up
fantapants
14th January 2010, 10:04 PM
it wasnt first start up.
as far as im concerned there IS NO WAY ANYONE IS RESPONSIBLE BUT ME.
I have no idea what im doing most of the time and im fooling around with an engine. Any number of times i could have done something stupid that caused this. Ive also had the engine for nearly a year befor getting to this stage :)
Any engine you buy from a reputable supplier, like i did, will be from a car that was running when they baught it.
Brad has had NO trouble with his.
Im pretty sure buddy parts have had no problems.
I just managed to pasion fingers my way into trouble again :)
Have no fear, you will love the engine :)
