Just about to go get some oils for a service of my 86.......would anyone recommend doing a engine flush? I have had a little look at engine 'flushing' products, are they beneficial in anyway?

Also I dont think I have seen anyone put up a service checklist of what needs to be changed, cleaned, replaced....during a normal service.

I have a rough idea on what needs to be changed:
-motor oil
-fuel filter
-Oil Filter
-Coolant
-Gearbox oil

Anything else. Wouldn't mind having any recommendations on oil's to use and what weights, how much oil to use in motor/gearbox etc.
And finally is there a easier way to fill a gearbox up apart from through the shifter?

Cheers lads

through the shifter is the easiest!

there is a filler plug, but youll need a little hand pump to use it (from what i understand)

check the manual as to how much gearbox oil you need, i think its 1.9L, but check to be sure.

engine oil you fill it up till the dipstick sais its full.....then run engine and check it again.

assuming your talking about 4age, i use penrite hpr15. semi synthetic 15W-60. works good and not to thin. ive never used engine flush, they reckon diesel is good.

i woudlnt worry about changing your coolant if you are not having overheating issues, its not really a maintenance thing, if its still green its still good. don't fix something that isn't broken!

if its a 4ac change points if they are burnt out and possibly spark plugs if they arent looking so good. at least reset the gaps on both.
an 86 isnt any different to any car......change oil and oil filter and it will be happy.

Engine oil: use Woolworths. Change every 10,000km. Change every 5000km if you don't have air filters.
Gearbox oil: You only need to change it every 10 years. As long as there is some in there. Only GL-4 is needed.
Diff oil: normaly this could go for 10 years, but with LSD or fooling around, change it a bit more often. GL-5
Fuel filter: every 2 years.
Brake fluid: every 2 years, or every weekend if your racing.
Coolant: I like Toyota coolant. But keep using the same brand, don't mix.

Use a new alloy washer on the sump plug every time.

Get the engine warm to make the oil drain faster. Put the new oil in the sun to make it pour faster.

normal service in my 4a i choose to use penrite sin 5 - its 5w 60 full synthetic
i do an oil flush every oil change - on your 1st one just watch how much crap comes out. pour whole bottle in - start engine - idle for 10min - stop and dump oil.
change oil filter - i like to prime the filter with oil aswell, dont forget the smear the o ring with some fresh oil
fuel filter - change it if it hasnt been done or if your unsure when it was done last so then u will know.
Spark plugs - replace and check gap.
coolant - meh - if it looks dirty - if its not overheating dont bother.
gearbox - best take selector out , pump is a bitch unless you have a decent one with a lever.
diff - u will need a pump - unless its out of the car.

When putting the sump plug back in i like to dip the thread into some oil before i screw it back in - helps it seal - never had any issues doing all of the above.

and clear your air filter or replace.

I am OCD about servicing my car, I try to use genuine Toyota parts where I can.
I just changed the cambelt/tensioner/idler/water pump/fuel filter/coolant/air filter on the ae111 and I used all genuine parts.

I am especially OCD about oil and changes, I use Royal Purple 10W/40 that I change every 3000km with a K&N filter(which is primed like sundee86 said before it goes on), before people comment on such a low km change point, remember it only takes 3ltr including filter! and I rev the bajoolies out of it.

every xmas my car gets;
genuine fuel filter
genuine toyota coolant
brake fluid change(motul RBF600)

every 2 years new gearbox oil, I've been using Redline MTL

I have not had a car let me down for so long I can't remember!
