ok so i pulled out my crank angle sensor just to have a look at shit really. then when i put it back in it will just kick over for ages and not start. iv done this in the past and there was a nikko mark on the shaft (from the previos owner) which i lined up with a line and it was all good. but i must have rubbed it off, cause its gone and i have no idea how to get it right? helpsies?

there should be a marking or bump on the front face of the gear head on the shaft of the cas. Line that up with either a line or a dimple on the cast housing of the cas. Make sure engine is at top dead center**.
**Rotate crank till it lines up with the 0 marking, to verify remove the oil cap and look directly onto the camshaft to look for a dimple which should be pointing straight up - if not rotate the crank 1 more complete turn back to the zero marking again.

make sure its not skipping a tooth when you put it back in otherwise you ignition timing will be out.

Has it got spark?
Also as timbo said if it is skipping a tooth, rotate the cas around while its pushed into the head and keep trying till it starts. Normally though if you are a little bit out it tends to still start :/
