ok, from work i've done on street cars rules's are as follows:

# The battery must be well secured
# Battery must be ventaliated inside a secured box

and from what ive been told by engineers now, is there has to be a indication of some sort to notify the battery is located in the boot, And, there has to be some sort of ventilation (from the battery) to the outside of the car.

I have yet to speak to my engineer about dry-cell battery's, so my thought would be shouldnt have to ventilate to outside of car for dry-cell.

in short, i guess unless you really need that extra room, don't bother.

hope i've helped somewhat.
ben.

EDIT: The laws i've mentioned above are only for victoria, im not sure about other states:thumbup:

i wouldn't fail you for it put it that way, unless if your mechanic is a cunt it should be fine (as long as it doesn't jump around in your boot)

Has to be seperated from the passenger cabin.

how you do that with a hatchback i have no idea.

get a dry cell and put it in the boot. I dont think old cunts who RWC/greenslip will mind much.

I bought a car that had been crashed recently. Had the battery in the boot in one of those standard plastic battery boxes. The box seemed to have just been attached to the floor with screws. From the shards of plastic I found in the boot, I'd say the battery kept right on going when the car came to a sudden stop. In a hatch, this would be bad news for the back of your head.

i know for a fact that cams requires that the battery is to be held/clamped in place via a battery mount that goes to body of the car much like standard. so like the above you cant just have the battery in a battery box with the battery box bolted up to the body . because of the very above reason . shit will go flying.

the battery box is there to prevent spillages leaking and being a ignition source or a fuel for fire.

the way i did mine was simple, drilled 2 holes in the boot and through the bat box. wide enough to fit the battery in between the battery clamp. then just install the clamp while the battery was in the box. the weight and clamp force on the battery will keep the bat box in place for it not move around .and a bungee cord was used to keep the lid closed.

My girlfriend car got defected and had same problem, battery had to be vented to atmosphere and the venting tube had to be a set distance away from the exhaust (cant remember what it was exactly) and had to be bolted securely to the car itself whether in a box or not, from memory they said it really didnt need to be in a box just bolted down so it couldnt move.

Dry cell (sealed unit battery) in a secured box is your answer ......
