I have just purchased a sprinter (ADM). This is an unmodified vehicle.
Under the car near the fuel filter there is an aftermarket "fuel pump" box. I can't say i have ever seen one of these before. It does make a noise that is alot deeper than the walbro/bosch/GTR pumps i am used to. It is currently hooked up to IGN ON power.
to save me having a look, what type of pumps do these things have fitted in the tank (if at all).
Can i just whack a Walbro pump in there using the same wiring as this pump box thing?
Cheers

first up that's dangerous and illegal. Yes it's modified. The stock pump is mechanical and bolted to the side of the engine. Nothing is in the tank except for a float

The pump is fine, sam means that the wiring is dangerous. If you have an accident the pump will still run if the engine is off. If you have a split line then you will begin to empty the contents of you tank into your hot and potentially live engine bay.

So why would the elderly previous owner have fitted this pump box then?
How should i wire this thing up for safety?
Can i just whack a walbro in the tank?

there are devices to make the pump only run when the engine is running, however using a relay off the ignition and a relay off the oil pressure switch might have the same effect. You can use an in tank low pressure pump (not an efi one) or just get another stock one for like $0.50

so i would be right in thinking that this would have been fitted to counteract a failing standard pump?

More than likely. The factory fuel pumps are known for dying. You can buy them after market though, do that and get rid of the electric one, as said its not safe to have it wired to IGN.

Or simply add a tachometric relay from a VK Commodore. $2 from Pick-a-part. (or an aftermarket one for gas conversions. More than $2).

where are they located in the car and how are they hooked up?

Sam if that was directed at me, they're in the fuse box. Look like a normal relay, only taller and with two extra, smaller terminals on the bottom.
Hooked up with a bunch of wires. Pinout and wiring info is on Toymods (I'd initially made a dumb mistake wiring it and had to ask)

I would just go buy a new mechanical fuel pump, I don't see why you need electric if its only a standard 4AC

Don't buy a new one. A friend of mine had to pay $150 for one from Sprint Auto for it. Pick one up from a wrecker or someone on here.
